Thomas J. Tipton, age 84, of Upper Arlington, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. He was born December 27, 1926 in Columbus, Ohio the only child of Thomas F. and Flossie Tipton. Graduated from Central High School and attended The Ohio State University. Tom was employed with George J. Igel & Co. for 44 years retiring as Vice President of Operations. Veteran World War II serving in the U.S. Army in occupied Japan as a staff sergeant and army photographer; he guarded and photographed prisoners at Sagamo Prison, among them Tojo and Tokyo Rose. He was a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather who cherished spending time with his family. Tom is survived by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis; daughter, Heather (David) Downs; son, Thomas S. Tipton and two grandchildren, Jenna and Greg Downs; other relatives and many friends. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and over 45 year member and past Master of Linden Lodge # 637 F & AM, where he served as the lodge secretary for 29 years. He was also a member of Scottish Rite. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, where Masonic Service will be held 8:00 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2011 in the Chapel at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1581 Cambridge Blvd. with Rev. Philip Brooks officiating. Interment to follow Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the “Organ Maintenance Fund” at Trinity United Methodist Church, Columbus, OH 43212, in his memory.
