

1-room school-house in Sabina, IL and then attended and graduated as Valedictorian at LeRoy(Empire Township) High School where he met the love of his life, Kay Iden. He received his B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering with Honors from the University of Illinois in 1962.
His career began with Humble Oil, division of Standard Oil in New Jersey. He later joined Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio where he developed his world recognized reputation in the field of explosion bonding. After 26 years at Battelle, he transferred to the Edison Welding Institute as Manager of the Materials Department.
In 1992, Vonne founded and was the CEO and Director of Technology of Regal Technology Corporation dedicated to the commercialized manufacture of explosion bonding products.
Vonne holds multiple global patents for explosive bonding processes and received the 2011 Distinguished Merit Alumni Award from the Materials Science and Engineering Alumni Board at the University of Illinois. The award recognized Vonne’s distinguished career in the area of explosion bonding and high energy rate processing of materials. His research and development work is represented and utilized from the Canadian oil and gas pipelines to oil refineries, to airplane engine turbine blades to the Space Station as well as to parts on the Mars Rover .
He served at the Chairman of the National Materials Advisory Board-Academy of Sciences, Advisory Board member for the Material Science Department-University of Illinois, Advisory Board Member for Department of Metallurgy-The Ohio State University, was an active member of the Executive Board (EBI) and authored several chapters of American Welding Society Welding Handbook
Vonne and his wife Kay have been married for 61 ½ years and have two sons Brett (Toni) and John (Pamela). As well, they celebrate their 5 grandchildren- Cara, Michael, Kristin, William and Katie. Vonne is also survived by his sister Carole (George) Hudelson in Madison, WI.
Vonne and Kay most enjoyed travelling with some of their favorite spots being in the Smokey Mountains and visiting “Vonne’s Bench” along the Tremont Trail, enjoying Cades Cove and fly fishing. As well, they have enjoyed spending recent winters visiting Cocoa Beach, FL to enjoy joyous sunrises together with their coffee overlooking the beach and the Atlantic Ocean each morning. Their travels have taken them all over including Rome, Paris, London, Toronto, Montreal, St Martin, Cancun, and many wonderful destinations and national parks within the US.
He was an avid model railroader with a keen life- long focus on the “steam engine” era. His train layout is a 61-year labor of love hand built with an expansive multi- level rendition built roughly off the images of the C & O railroad in the West Virginia coal fields and always is in a state of expansion and building.
Vonne’s home church is Liberty Presbyterian in Powell, Ohio where he served the Stephens Ministry in support of members of the church. Vonne and Kay also have thoroughly enjoyed building life- long friendships with the Liberty “Top of the Hill Gang”
The family wishes to honor the Ohio Health Hospice team who helped support Vonne’s desire to remain at home over the past 3 ½ months. We were truly blessed with our Hospice angels who included Joanne, Lauren, Jodi, Amy, Dr. Patel and Dr. Mason as well as many others at Kobacker House and the entire Hospice team who visited us at the home and became a part of our family over these days.
