

William David Herring, age 86, died on September 19, 2016. Bill was the only son of the late Vester Herring and Agnes Butler Herring. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean Powell Herring. He is also survived by his three sons, David (Linda Smith Herring), Keith (Un Kyong Yun Herring), Chris (Laura Cowhard Herring); grandsons, Ryan Christopher (Shannen), Kyle Christopher, Michael Taylor, William Collins; and granddaughter, Jeana Lynn. Bill is also survived by one of his two sisters, Dorothy Herring McClung of Myrtle Beach, SC; nieces, Linda Carney Brazell, Jan Carney Flaherty, Judy Carney Smith, Tina McClung Cook and Sandra McClung Sansbury. He is preceded in death by his oldest sister, Lois Herring Carney.
Bill was born 17 August 1930 in Sumter, SC. He grew up in Sumter and was active in the YMCA, Boy Scouts and the Royal Ambassadors. He graduated from Edmonds High School in Sumter in 1948 and was in the first class in South Carolina to complete twelve years of school. While at Edmonds High, Bill was a Class officer; a member of the Dramatics club; Block S Club; Hi-Y Club: a Charter member of the Rajah Club; and Captain in the school Military Battalion. He played three years of football and two years of basketball winning four school letters. His basketball team won the South Carolina State Championship in 1948. He was also a Life Guard at Second Mill, a popular swimming lake in Sumter. Bill graduated from Furman University in 1952 with a BA in Education and a minor in Biology. While at Furman Bill was a member of the Blue Key National Honor Society; the Furman Block F Club and Treasurer of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He was a member of the university Gymnastics team, member of the track team and a football letterman. Bill also participated as an athlete on many Intramural teams and was named to numerous All-Star teams. He is a member of the Furman Presidents Club, the Paladin Club, the Furman Football Players Association and a former Class Agent. Bill coached and taught at Clarkton High School in Clarkton, NC from 1952 to 1958. He taught Biology, History, Health and Physical Education. He was Athletic Director and coach of the football, basketball and baseball teams. His six year football record was 40 wins, eleven loses and one tie. In 1958 the school won the Class A State Football Championship with an 11 and 0 record. In six years Bill's teams won 12 championships, 7 in football, 2 in basketball and 3 in baseball. In 1958 Bill joined Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company in Hickory, NC as a Field Claimsman. He was with Nationwide 33 years and served as a Safety Specialist, Regional Safety Manager, Commercial Sales manager, Account Manager, Business Insurance Training Manager, Director of Marketing Training, Director of Marketing Manpower, Regional Sales Manager, and Sales Management Development Associate. He won numerous sales management awards including President's Club and Drummers Society. He was a Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU); Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), and Registered Health Underwriter (RHU). Bill was a member of the Hickory, NC Junior Chamber of Commerce; the Clarkton, NC Lions Club; the Hickory, NC Civitan Club; the Orlando Florida Toastmasters Club; the American Society of Training and Development; the Columbus Ohio Sales Executives Club; the Holiday Lakes Security Patrol; the Helen Ellis Hospital Volunteer Association; and the Pinellas County Sheriff Advisory Board. He was a long-time member of the Northwest United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio where he faithfully served on the Administrative Board, the Finance Committee and the Missions Committee. Bill retired in 1991 and enjoyed traveling and spending time at Ocean Isle Beach, NC and Tarpon Springs, FL. His great loves in life were his God, his family and his vocation. He had a passion for work and achieving. He also enjoyed many years of keeping in touch with best friends in Sumter, Furman University, and Clarkton, NC. He was especially indebted to his good friend from Clarkton, Maurice Rivenbark. "Mo" played halfback on the Clarkton state championship football team in 1957 and has been a steadfast and loyal friend since that time. Bill was an avid Ohio State football fan and is a member of the Ohio State Presidents Club. Family will receive friends at Northwest United Methodist Church 5200 Riverside Dr. Columbus, OH 43220. Saturday, September 24, 2016 from 10:30 a.m. until time of his memorial service at 11:30 a.m., with a reception to follow. Pastor Mebane McMahon will officiate.
