William ("Bill") Frank Newman, born June 7, 1929 in Wellston, Ohio, died June 22, 2018 in Columbus, Ohio, at the age of 89 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Gloria (Naso) Newman, daughter Marianne Dula and grandson Bryan Dula. He is survived by daughters Rosemarie (Michael) Coleman, Patricia (Steven) Hand, Dorothy (Mark) Iwanski, son-in-law Walter Dula, and sisters Martha Graves, of Wellston, Ohio, and Mary Willis, of Orlando, Florida. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and counting.
William grew up in Wellston, Ohio, and during his youth he worked in his father's grocery store and meat market. He entered the United States Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Captain. Following military service, as a graduate of Ohio University, he attended the Ohio State University School of Law, where he obtained his Juris Doctorate in 1954.
Bill practiced law for 61 years, and was a partner in the Columbus Law Firm of Lucas, Prendergast, Albright, Gibson and Newman. He is an Honorary Trustee to the Columbus Apartment Association, author of their "Blue Book Manual" for Apartment Owners as well as The Ohio Bar Associations Manual of Landlord Tenant Law. He was a member of the Columbus and Ohio State Bar Association, holding Fellow Status with the Ohio State Bar Association.
Bill gave back to his community in a myriad of ways, including: joining Kiwanis in 1965, serving as President of Kiwanis Foundation, and receiving special honor for his dedicated service to Kiwanis. He was a past President of Worthington Hills Civic Association, St. Michael's Holy Name Society, and The Saint Vincent DePaul Society. He was a member of The Sierra Club and founder and active member of Worthington Historical Society. Bill's contributions to our community will be truly missed.
Family was the most important thing in life to Bill. He truly believed he found pure happiness in being a grand-parent. He will be remembered for telling everyone that "The devil owed him a debt and he paid it off in four daughters". Bill loved to sit on his deck with his grand and great-grandchildren or challenge them to a "run to the rock" in his back yard, and to listen to Eddy Arnold. An avid golfer, Bill was a member at Worthington Hills Country Club. He enjoyed wood-working, and his wife's Italian cooking and his sweets!
