Margie was born on September 21, 1935, in Yonkers to Camillo Mingone and Gloria Breda. She was baptized at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and remained connected to her Catholic faith.
On January 18, 1958, Margie married the love of her life, Walter Scannell, after first dating him when she was just 19 years old. Together they built a beautiful life full of family, music, love, faith, and many wonderful experiences together. They shared a beautiful marriage for 60 years until Walter’s passing in 2018.
Margie had a long and successful career in real estate management. She worked at Lackman Realty for 17 years and later worked for Goodman Management in Riverdale until retiring at the impressive age of 81. She was hardworking, organized, and cared deeply about doing things well.
One of the most important parts of Margie’s life was helping others. After her own surgery, she became very involved with the Colostomy Society of New York and the United Ostomy Associations of America for more than 30 years, serving as president for several years. She visited patients in hospitals to offer support, encouragement, and hope. She also spoke at ostomy conferences around the country, sharing her knowledge with others.
Margie loved cooking, especially traditional Italian recipes passed down from her mother, and enjoyed sharing them with family during holidays and special occasions.
Margie also had a deep love for Opera and Classical Music. She sang with the Rockland County Choral Society for more than 20 years. For over a decade, she traveled from Riverdale to Rockland every Monday night for rehearsal, with her beloved husband, Walter, who proudly sang beside her.
Margie will be remembered for her strength, kindness, and generosity. She touched many lives through her family, her friendships, her volunteer work, and her music.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Walter Scannell. She is survived by her loving brother, Mario Mingone, and his wife, Jan; her nieces and nephews, Cathy, Anthony and Lisa, Tommy and Christine, Aimee, and Justin; and many loving great nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence of United Hospice in New City for their compassion, kindness, and care during Margie’s final days.
