Peter Lawrence Moro, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and a decorated public servant who dedicated his life to the defense of his country and his city, passed away peacefully with family by his side on March 20. Born in the Bronx on May 29, 1949, to Raymond Moro and Margaret Irwin, Peter grew up alongside his brothers, Robert and Jeffrey. He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in 1967, and immediately followed a calling to serve, joining the U.S. Army.
A proud paratrooper with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, Peter volunteered for a combat tour in Vietnam in 1968. During his service, he was wounded in the line of duty.Though missing the necessary field documentation, his family continued to advocate for his Purple Heart over the years. Peter eventually attained the rank of Sergeant and served a total of 5 ½ years before being honorably discharged in 1973.
Upon returning home, Peter pursued higher education at Mercy College and later graduated from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice with a bachelor’s degree in 1985. In 1979, he began a distinguished 22-year career with the New York City Police Department. Starting as a patrolman, he rose to become a Second Grade Detective, serving in the Robbery Identification Program (R.I.P. Unit), the Organized Crime Control Bureau, and the Homicide squad. His commitment to New York City, the city he was born in and loved greatly, never wavered. He retired August 31, 2001 and even in retirement, he volunteered for the clean-up efforts at Ground Zero following the 9/11 attacks and remained active with the NYPD Retiree Mobilization Unit.
Peter’s service continued for another 15 years at the Bronx District Attorney’s office as a Senior Detective Investigator, where he specialized in white-collar crime, child abuse cases, and prisoner extraditions.
Beyond his professional achievements, Peter was a man of immense personal strength, providing wisdom to those around him. He was always there for family, friends and his professional community, whom he also viewed as family. Peter was a beloved husband to his wife, Nancy, whom he married in 1978. Their partnership was admired for its love, balance, and unwavering support for each other. Peter was a guiding light to his three children: Christopher, Aileen, and Kevin and their spouses Jessica, Brian and Marie. He took great joy in his four grandchildren, Alyson, Rose, Nolan, and Delaney. He was always there for his loving brothers Robert and Jeffrey, his cousins and extended family, including his in-laws, the Hoff family, and a cherished Uncle to many nephews and nieces. And of course, through his life, he treasured his faithful dogs, Trooper, Tim, Kobi, and Max.
Peter Moro was a hero to his family and his community, teaching his children the value of a strong work ethic and the importance of being good citizens. He leaves behind a legacy as a loyal protector of the city and country he loved. He will be remembered for his kind, genuine soul and a quiet strength that was a steady hand to all who knew him.
