Verne was born February 17th, 1943 in Balaton Minnesota to Harold and Esther Bennett. He grew up on the family farm. Verne graduated from Balaton High School in 1962. He worked as a welder after graduating for a few years and then worked as a tree trimmer. In 1977, Verne learned to drive a semi-truck and started working delivering groceries to SuperValu stores. He then started driving trucks over the road in 1978. He would be gone about two weeks at a time before coming back home for a few days. This ended up being his passion and he drove trucks for over 40 years!!
On August 11, 1979 Verne married Clydia Strand at a small ceremony attended by family and friends. On August 22, 1982 Verne and Clydia welcomed the first addition to the family, a son named Joshua Verne Bennett. On June 15, 1985 another son was welcomed Matthew Millard Bennett. Verne continued to drive truck over the road for 20 years working for a variety of companies and hauling everything from flatbed to reefers and everything in between. He had a lot of adventures on the road and always enjoyed taking his boys with him in the truck during the summer months.
In 1997, he bought a day-cab Kenworth which happened to be blue. This started the tradition and saying in the family that “trucks are blue and cars are red” was started. This continues to be the phrase that is still used by the family.
Once he bought the day-cab he worked for Eagle Trucking, Shaw Trucking, Dart and finally Mullin Trucking hauling construction materials.
In 2015 Verne decided it was finally time to retire and sold his truck to his son Josh, who was following in his dad’s footsteps and was also a truck driver.
Verne enjoyed his retirement going on long trips to Texas over the winter months with his wife.
