Mr. Mace was a Brooklyn native, born and raised there to his parents, the late Alfio and Josephine. Joseph grew up there, attending and graduating from Brooklyn schools. Joseph went into the printing business, and while working, also had the opportunity to teach, doing so at the New York School of Printing.
Through the blessing of a family cousin, Joseph was introduced to his future bride, the former Antoinette Incorvaia. Love blossomed and they were married in 1952 – this past year they celebrated 65 years of marriage!
Moving out to Copiague, they bought a home, and here is where they raised their family. Becoming part of the Copiague community started small for him, but continued to grow over the years. In 1961 he joined the Copiague Fire Department; working up through the ranks of officers, becoming Chief of Department. This year he celebrated 56 years of service to the Department and the community. In the earlier years, Joseph was instrumental in being a part of the dedicated men who created the Junior Fire Department; and made trips to the elementary school for Fire Safety and Fire Prevention programs. In the later years, he was part of the Annual Golf fundraiser committee. Joe was a Past-President of the Suffolk County Chiefs Association. As members of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Joseph was an integral part of the team that did the fundraising for the building of the church Auditorium. When he had a little additional time for fun and relaxation, he cheered on the Yankees; and made it out to the golf course.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Antoinette; and his children – Mark, Ed and his daughter-in-law, Cindy; and Judy Notarstefano and his son-in-law, Kenneth. He also leaves his grandchildren – Carissa, Ariana, Tyler, Valerie, Melanie and Matthew; and his great-grandson, Michael.
Family and friends will gather at the Copiague Fire Department on Thursday, January 18th, for visitation hours, from 4:00 – 9:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, January 19th at 10:45 a.m., at Our Lady of the Assumption R.C. Church. Interment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
