Mr. Delgado was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, to his late parents, Nazario and Delia. While growing up, he served two years as was required with the Ecuadorian Military. Among his friends in the neighborhood was a young lady by the name of Hilda Chang. As a young man Sergio moved to the United States, and a few years later, Hilda did, too. As fate would intervene, they rekindled their friendship when they met up again while both resided then in Queens. Their relationship blossomed, and they were married in 1972. They remained in Queens for a time, then moved a bit, spending some years back in Ecuador, then coming back to Long Island where they settled in Copiague.
In his years of work, Sergio was a professional painter, having retired from years of service at Brunswick Hospital in Amityville. His sons recall a man of integrity, a ‘role model’ who worked hard, and lived by his motto “lead by example”. Sergio instilled these work ethics into his sons, bringing them to work with him and in ‘leading by example’ showed them how he expected them to grow and do the same. Above all, he was a family man whose love revolved around his wife, his sons and his grandchildren. Sergio loved to listen to music, putting records on from the moment he arrived home from work until he retired for the night. He enjoyed bike riding, and was an avid soccer fan.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 44 years, Hilda; his sons – Douglas and daughter-in-law, Teresa and Darwin and daughter-in-law, Toniann; and his grandchildren – Sofia, Dylan, Mason and Analiese. Also surviving are his siblings – brothers, Alfredo and Luis, and his sister, America. In addition to his parents, Sergio is predeceased by his brothers, Nestor and Manuel.
Family and friends will gather at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 20th, from 2-4:30 and 7-9:30 p.m. A Funeral Wake Service will be offered during the evening hours. Cremation is private.
