Dorothy Elaine Smith (née Palmer) passed away in the early hours of May 5, 2020, from medical issues following a severe stroke. Born July 19, 1947, she hailed from Kingston (Jamaica) where she was the youngest under sisters Carol Veronica and Edna Pearl. Dorothy was raised Church of England, and they all shared in the loving care of Vivian and Beatrice (née Ford).
Graduating from Merle Grove High School, she then attended University of the West Indies to study Nursing, meeting Winston George Smith there during an off chance school break. Within a year’s time, she had married (1970) and migrated with him to the United States of America, initially setting first roots in the Bronx (New York City, NY).
Soon came Christopher George (1971) and Camille Andrea (1973) into the mix, before this budding family took new roots and set up home in Howell, NJ for nearly 24 years. Thankfully, she was able to keep her profession as a Registered Nurse at Monmouth Medical Centre (formally, Paul Kimball Hospital), throughout the 70s and 80s.
Before her children could graduate from college, she was called to relocate once again for Winston’s work (1993), and settled in Coppell, TX. In her new life and enjoying empty nest, she worked in (Medical) Case Management for Aetna Health - Aetna Life Insurance Company until her formal retirement (2012). Her and Winston were regular attendees of Holy Family of Nazareth in Irving, TX continuing even after Winston’s passing (2011).
Dorothy was a loving & Faith filled Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother and Grandmother. She was a born Peacekeeper and will be fondly remembered for her love of family, for her gentle & calm demeanor, and for her unique mix of sharp wit and sense of humor. And of course for her beautiful smile! Grandma Dor always quietly ‘made things right’.
She is survived by her children Christopher & Camille, and grandchildren Andrea Elaine, in America, and Emma-Louise, Winston Joseph, Angeline Maree Therese, Dorothy Kaye, Declan Anthony & Miles Christopher in Australia.
May she enjoy her Eternal reward for a life well lived.
Rest In Peace Dorothy Elaine Smith.
We love you!
