

Air Force Major (Retired), Nancy Sue Lumsden Bendschneider passed away on March 28, 2018 at the age of 82 at Seasons Alzheimer’s in San Antonio, Texas. Nancy was born in Boones Mill, Virginia on August 6, 1935. Her parents were Jesse Lumsden and Edna Mills Lumsden. She was married in 1998 to USMC CWO, Frank E. Bendschneider. Her childhood was spent on the family farm in Boones Mill and later in Louisa, Virginia where she graduated from Louisa County High School in 1954. She graduated from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Nursing and was very proud of the fact that J. Shelton Horsley M.D trained her. She was a Clinical Nurse, Flight Nurse and Nursing Administrator during her career with the Air Force earning the AF Longevity Service Award W/4 Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, AF Outstanding Unit Award W/2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal and the AF Commendation Medal. She often spoke of the missions flown to pick up and care for the wounded during the Vietnam War. For a period of three years in the early 1960’s, Major Lumsden was assigned to be the personal nurse for First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Following her career with the Air Force, she became a nurse for the U.S. Postal Service where she served for many years.
Nancy was an avid golfer and snow skier, enjoyed driving her cars, listening to Beethoven and particularly loved taking care of her mother and husband during the last years of their lives. She is survived by her sister, Anne Lumsden Kinzie of Winchester, Virginia, brother Clarence Lumsden and his wife Shirley, brother Albert Lumsden and his wife Anita and many nieces and nephews. Brothers, Sherman, Arthur, Glenn, Wallace and sisters, Shelby, Jean and Shirley, predecease her. Although she had no children, her dear Doberman Pinschers (Lance, Shatze and Speer) brought her great joy.
Major Lumsden will be honored and interred at the Dallas – Fort Worth National Cemetery on April 9, 2018 at 11:15 am. Dallas / Fort Worth Dignity Memorial is in charge of arrangements. For more information, call Rolling Oaks Funeral Home at 972-745-1638.
