

Ralph Allen Gardner, 80, of Greenwood, Mississippi, passed away on January 31, 2024, in Killeen, Texas. He was born on June 27, 1943, in Greenwood, Mississippi, to the late Ralph E Gardner and Mary F. (Harper) Gardner.
Ralph had a distinguished military career, serving in the U.S. Army for 26-1/2 years, achieving the rank of Sergeant Major (Ret). He dedicated his life to serving his country and was a highly respected member of the military community.
After retiring from the military, Ralph embarked on a career with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He served as a Sergeant (Ret) for 18 years at the Huntsville TX Correctional Facility, contributing to the safety and security of the community.
In his free time, Ralph was an active member of various organizations, including the Master Mason, Scottish Rite, Shrines, American Legion, VFW, and 40/8. He was a member of these organizations for over 25 years and held a deep commitment to their values and missions. Ralph also enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors, finding solace in nature.
Ralph is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Verna M (Purcell) Gardner, whom he married on June 1, 1967. He is also survived by his children: Cheryl Perez, Eugene Lauffenberger, Shelly Heritage, Rachel Abston, and Damon Gardner Sr. Ralph was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph E Gardner and Mary F. (Harper) Gardner, as well as his brothers: Jack, George, Edward, and Ronnie. He also mourned the loss of his son Clyde Abston and grandson Joshua Perez.
Ralph attended Greenwood High School in Mississippi, where he laid the foundation for his future endeavors.
Ralph Allen Gardner will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his country, his commitment to public service, and his love for his family. His contributions to the military, law enforcement, and community organizations have left a lasting impact. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Visitation will be held from 10am to 1pm on Monday February 12th at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove, Texas. A Graveside Service will be held at 3pm Monday February 12th at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.
