

Mrs. Whitfield died on Thursday morning, November 15, 2012 at Whitfield Nursing Home following a lengthy illness. She was born in St. Louis, MO on April 25, 1932 to the late Jack and Eleanor Jones Jennings. She moved to Corinth as a child and graduated from Corinth High School. She then furthered her education at Judson College in Marion, AL where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She was the publicity director and instructor of English there at the college. Following this, she performed a graduate study in journalism and received her Master’s Degree from the University of Mississippi. She was also a co-owner of Whitfield Nursing Home.
She was a passionate supporter of animal rights. She served on the board of the Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter, and provided funding for the building and furnishings of the visiting room that has been named in her honor. She has been an active member of First Baptist Church since 1955, sang in the choir and was a featured soprano. She has served as president of the Little Garden Club of Corinth, Shakespeare Club, Corinth Music Club, and the Twentieth Century Club. She was also the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of Corinth Theater Arts, a recipient of four Magnolia “Maggie” Awards, and the recipient of one of the Rotary’s highest honors – a Paul Harris Fellow.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Benjamin Maury Whitfield.
Her survivors include her daughter, Jennie Whitfield Hibbard and husband Jack; one granddaughter, Jacqueline Hibbard; one brother-in-law, Winston Whitfield and wife Genida; a niece, Lynda Whitfield; two nephews, Whit and Benjamin Whitfield; a cousin, Margaret Huntley; and special friends, Jimmy Deaton and the staff of Whitfield Nursing Home.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that donations be made to the Corinth-Alcorn County Animal Shelter or the American Cancer Society.
