

Ernest August Werner Schaefer (Ernie) ~ passed away on April 15, 2022 at the Heartwood Long Term Care Centre in Cornwall at the age of 89. He is survived by: two sons, Christopher (spouse Yvonne) of Thunder Bay, and Andrew of Cornwall; two grandsons Brian and Brandon; his sister-in-law Joanne Schaefer of Calgary; and three nieces and nephews Kathy (Steve), Karen (Dien), Rob (Barb) along with their children Joel, Kristi, Julia, Danny, Cameron, James and Michael.
He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (neé Glandon), his brother Harry, his mother Kate (neé Ciliax) and his father Ernst.
Ernie was born on January 5, 1933 in St. Paul, Alberta. He grew up in Calgary and graduated from the University of Alberta as a Civil Engineer in 1956. Ernie’s life’s work spanned 13 years as plant engineer for Inland Steel Co. in Atikokan, 28 years as a St. Lawrence College Professor in Cornwall and 11 years as a building inspector in the Cornwall area.
He was co-chairman of the Eastern Ontario Training and Adjustment Board for more than 10 years and was very involved in local politics at municipal, provincial and federal levels. On a personal level Ernie enjoyed camping with his family and photography in his younger years, and in building his financial planning competency throughout his later years. Ernie was always accepting of life changes, and welcomed each with amazing strength and determination.
In keeping with Ernie’s final wishes, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Lahaie & Sullivan Cornwall Funeral Homes West Branch, 20 Seventh Street West (613-932-8482).
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society, would be appreciated by the family.
