
Gloria Jean Marie Kakwirareh Thompson of the Snipe Clan, age 70 of 282 Island Road, Kawehnoke passed away under the loving care of her family in her home on Friday, June12, 2015. Gloria was granted her angel wings after a courageous battle against bile duct cancer.
Gloria was born on March 10, 1945 in Cornwall, Ontario to Annie Caldwell McDonald and James Thompson. She was married on July 1, 1967 to Ronald Thompson at the St Regis Parish officiated by Father Arsonnault.
Gloria attended the Indian Day School on Cornwall Island. She attended St. Lawrence High School and later received her GED. She successfully received certification in Accounting from the Academy of Learning.
Gloria resided briefly in East Rochester and Syracuse but settled permanently in Akwesasne, where she raised her family.
Gloria’s lifetime achievements include babysitting, bartending, secretary/book keeping, Mohawk Council Finance Department, Akwesasne Jr. B Wolves Hockey Club President from 1998-2015, Cornwall Island Day Care Founder in 1982, Cornwall Island Homemakers Member, Rona’thonni Cultural Center Finance Officer 1973-present, Akwesasne Police Commission, Upper Canada District School Board Committee, Bowling Team, Akwesasne area Management Board Member, Kahwenoke Recreation Center President, North Country Ladies-NAITC Team, Cornwall Multicultural Committee, Akwesasne Minor Lacrosse Association, Akwesasne Winter Carnival Committee, and Akwesanse Mohawk Board of Education.
Gloria’s interests included bowling, promotion of local hockey, knitting, crocheting, reading and watching lacrosse.
Gloria is survived by her children, Angela, Michael Fredrick and tasha, and Tracey Thompson, chosen daughter, Char Cook, chosen sons, Perry / Karen Francis, Frankie Allen, Drew Baker, her mother, Annie Caldwell McDonald, her brothers Jerome (Moochie) McDonald, Robert and LucyAnn, Norris and Sylvia, Timothy and Rebecca, Luke, Roger and Peggy. Gloria is survived by her sisters Jennifer and Charles David, Martha Mitchell, Lucille and Ronnie Cook, Velma and Leon Cook, Stephanie, Maureen and Howie Jock, Ruthie and Sherwin Seymour, her sisters-in-law, Joan and Richard Mitchell, Margie Thompson, Louise and Darrell Thompson, Mary Hopkinson, Linda Jackson, Sandra and Cedric Isaac, and her Goddaughter Andrea (Dooks) Thompson. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Gloria is survived by her chosen Grandchildren, Lindsay Day and Frank Hill, Carson Day, Skkylar Thomas, Keldron King, Kristin Cook, Erica, Taylor, Corie Francis, chosen great grandchildren Lena Hill, Jaden and Jayce (James) Cook-Delorimier, and Koda Goodleaf.
Gloria was predeceased by her husband, Ronald, in 1970, her grandparents, Paul and Katie Caldwell, her sister and brother-in-law, Hilda and Dewey Swamp, chosen grandson, Landon C. Day, brothers-in-law, Frank and Gerald (Washington) Thompson.
Family and friends may call at her home on Cornwall Island beginning Monday June 15, 2015 at 4:00 pm until Wednesday June 17, 2015 at 11:00 am, at which time a Celebration of Life Service will commence.
