It is with love and heartfelt memories that we share the passing of Sylvia Harps, age 78, on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at the Glen Stor Dun Lodge Long Term Care, where she spent the last five years.
Beloved wife of 57 years to Gerry “Harpo” Harps. Loving mother and biggest cheerleader to her daughter Kelly Harps (Jamie Villeneuve) and her son Jamie Harps (Gillian). Cherished and adored grandmother to her four grandsons Jace, Micah, Caillen, and Rylan who affectionately called her Nan. Sylvia always put her family first; she was a constant support, a pillar of strength, and she loved unconditionally.
Sylvia is predeceased by her parents Arthur and Yvette (Schryer) Wharton, and her big sister Beverly Burgess (late Tom). She is survived by her little brother John Wharton (late Carolyn), along with many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends who adored her and will deeply miss her presence, kindness, laughter, and warm smile.
A gifted floral designer and businesswoman, Sylvia was well known in the community as the original owner of Floral Expressions, which she and her sister opened in 1990. She was a talented entrepreneur who loved creating fabulous, on-trend arrangements and wedding designs. Sylvia also enjoyed woodworking and was always game for a new adventure. Beyond her artistic abilities, she was a kind and gentle soul, known for being easygoing and fun-loving.
She cherished time outdoors, whether by a lake, around a campfire, or in her beautiful backyard garden. She enjoyed music and dancing, antiquing and yard sales, traveling, and going on excursions with family and friends.
After a long struggle with Alzheimer’s, this has been the “longest goodbye.” She is now at peace, reunited with loved ones who have passed before her, who are no doubt welcoming her with hugs—and perhaps a martini.
Her legacy of kindness, strength, and unconditional love will forever live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In keeping with Sylvia’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at Lahaie & Sullivan West Branch, 20 Seventh Street West, Cornwall, on Friday, September 26, 2025, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and 6:00–9:00 p.m. The family welcomes you to share your fond and happy memories, stories, and photos to celebrate the wonderful person Sylvia was and the joy she brought to those around her.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sylvia’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society; a cause close to the family’s heart.
