Will forever remember the good times, when we were so close and will hold on to those memories....with love, your brother.

I'm feeling such a clear need to be there for today's reason for your gathering together as a family.  I'm not known to most of you.  I'm Edna Ratner, having been married with Max Ratner in 1959.

We managed a reunion in California, a grand one hosted by Delly and Al, that has remained unforgettable for me.  It was almost the first introduction to Max's family and I found it to be vital and attractive.  There was a wedding in Boston, where I met Canadian relatives and some happy repetitions of a few of you.

There were visits from Uncle Hy early on, from Philip, from Delly and Al, from Ace  (as Max called Azy, or Rose), from Irv and his wife and children, when they were still children.  More recently we had time with Irv in San Diego, meeting his now attractive-and-fully-grown-up county prosecutor daughter and her interesting husband. Then up the coast to see Betty and Elliot, David and Janet . . skittering through, with an over-night at best, with never enough dedicated time.  We were busy with our own family and Max's architectural practice and always assumed we'd fit in some really good time for far-away family, surely next season.
  
Max died in 2002 at 82, of pancreatic cancer.

Last summer I launched over to California, staying with Ace.  Managed a dinner with Irv and the Sobecks, and, wonderfully, visits with Delly at her apartment.  I found such reality-based strength and life in her.  I loved hearing about the family from forever back, and we made plans for the future when I would come out each year as Charlotte does.  I met Kay there, who was being so caring of Delly's needs, and I found someone with whom I wanted to form a complete friendship to join in the one that was developing with Delly.  I loved being in her home with Allen and hoped we would mesh soon again, with Delly as our cause.

But the reason I want to be exactly there is to feel integrated in the way that Delly allowed me to feel.  I was her sister.  My time with Delly can't be duplicated but it would be my deep satisfaction were I to be able to find a sense of her through those of you who would share with me the parts of her that you found precious.

(..sorry to have an excuse not to have set a flight from Cleveland upon the instant of learning that what Delly had told me on March 25 on the phone was going to be a truth:  
"If I get sick, I'm over."  We were talking about her going to share Ace's 92nd birthdate celebration.  

But upon checking with my recently-tested superlative orthopaedic surgeon and my truly dear primary care-giver, the advise was negative.  They'd recently seen me through a broken femur and they didn't see me as ready to fly.)

. . but my heart has flown to Delly and to you today.

We extend our deepest sympathy to the Needles Family and you can be assured she has a very peacful resting place.
