Charles Aknin passed away January 5, 2017. He was born on February 9,1932 the son of Isaac Aknin and Aziza Ben Soussan – a native of Oran, French Algeria. Charles was a holocaust survivor of the Vichy Regime in Algeria, who settled in Casablanca Morocco before immigrating to New York City on 12-17-1954 and later became a US citizen. After meeting on a blind date to Coney Island, Charles married Ann Leah Robbins at the Plaza Hotel on 11/30/1957. Their marriage lasted over 59 years! After working as a waiter at Maud Chez Elle Restaurant and his sister’s Lysange’s Mont Saint Michel French Restaurant, Charles opened the first Charles V (French) Restaurant on West 53rd Street in Manhattan across from the MOMA. In the late 1950s, Charles and Ann began their family with Gary, Ellen and Michelle moving to the Majestic Co-op Apartment in Manhattan. In 1965, they moved to Rye, NY where Charles opened his second Charles V Restaurant as a team and corporate name ANNCHAR Inc. and added to their family with the twins Stephanie and Deborah. In the early seventies, Charles converted his restaurant into the tremendously successful Zazou Discothèque. In 1976, the family relocated to Southern California, where Charles opened the third Charles V Restaurant in the LA’s mid Wilshire District. In 1980s Charles and Ann retired to Dana Point. Not able to stay retired for long Charles started Aknin Construction and built a home in Bonsal! Charles finally retired completely and was well known as an excellent chef and gracious host throughout the Niguel Shores Community and beyond. Charles enjoyed entertaining his close friends and family with elaborate dinners and parties!
Charles is survived by his wife, Ann, his five children Gary (Laurie), Ellen, Michelle (David), Stephanie (Mikhael), and Deborah (Mark), and 14 grandchildren: Ben, Dave (Laura), Lindsey (Brandon), Janna, Jennifer, Forrest, Joshua, Eli, Ariella, Judah, Aaron, Caleb, Bracha and Itzy. In 2016, Charles welcomed his first great grandchild, Bannen. His sister Lysange Guillerme of NYC and many nieces and nephews in the U.S. and France also survive Charles. His parents, Isaac and Aziza, brothers Albert, Leon and Gilbert and his sisters Paulette and Raymonde predeceased Charles,
Charles had an “effervescent” personality allowing him to make friends with people from all over and all walks of life. One of Charles favorite things to do was take his daily constitutional walks with his best friend Henri Hodara at the Dana Point Harbor— “ON MARCHE?”!
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Granny’s Place. A celebration of Charles’ life will be held at the family home…33701 Windlass Dr. Dana Point.
