Charlotte Ray Nahigan was born to Alvin Luther and Georgia Ann Scoggin in Lubbock, Texas on the 29th of September, 1929. She was the youngest of five children. Her siblings were Merle Knight, Mack Scoggin, John Scoggin, and Lou Hansen. They remained a very close knit and loving family throughout their lives.
Charlotte was a smart child and avid reader. Skipping grades, she began attending Lubbock High School at the age of 13. Having been very popular in High School, Charlotte and was named Football Sweetheart, Basketball Princess and Class Favorite as well as being elected Class Vice President 3 years running (it was a three year High School). She was also a cheerleader her junior year and head cheerleader her senior year. She loved school and was involved in as many school related clubs as she could fit into her schedule.
After graduating High School at 16, she followed her best friend Jodie Kuykendall (Schneider), to Pepperdine University where they each met their husbands. Throughout their lives, the four of them remained very close and, despite living in separate states, often traveled together.
Charlotte and Eddie moved from Los Angeles to Tustin early on in their marriage and had three children, Nancy, John and Carrie. After working many jobs, Eddie found his vocation in Real Estate. Trusting Charlotte’s input and sixth sense for business and people, Eddie put her on the board for his different companies, Red Hill Realty, Patrician Builders and Vision Realty. She remained on the board until they sold the companies and retired.
Charlotte was involved with the Assistance League of Tustin, volunteering at their thrift shop and helping with their many functions for decades. She also lent her assistance and donated to many other charities throughout the years.
Separately and as a couple, they enjoyed socializing with their group of friends and had get-togethers every weekend. The same group of friends were all members of the Red Hill Tennis and Racquet Club (Now the Tustin Hills Racquet Club) and while Eddie loved the tennis, Charlotte loved being involved in the plays they put on with the members. She had turns acting, directing, working props. She even worked as the wardrobe mistress, which, if you knew her, was funny as she could barely sew on a button.
When they moved to Newport Beach in the late 80’s, they took advantage of their memberships at Big Canyon Country Club and the Balboa Bay Club.
On Sundays, they could be found at Mariner’s Church in Irvine followed by lunch with their friends and neighbors at Big Canyon.
Her hobbies included reading (often three books at a time), bridge, crossword puzzles (in pen) and watching her favorite team, the Los Angeles Dodgers. She was such a fan that she even named her dog Dodger, and she loved that dog.
“Hospice” was always a scary word to us, until we met and worked with the earth angel that is Ila. Her kindness, strength and guidance throughout this season of Charlotte’s life is unparalleled. And Reggie, the next in command over her care, showed great devotion and empathy which we will always appreciate.
We want to give a special thanks to a few of her favorite care-givers over the years. Joel Llames,, Mary Ann Distrito, Rebecca Lambert, but most especially to those who cared for her the longest, Annabelle Guzman and Rowena Villavilez. We thank you all for extending her life with love and joy.
Charlotte led a life dedicated to her faith, family and friends. She was a woman of grace and kindness and a large portion of Southern charm. She was a very loving wife, mother and friend. The kindness she showed has left a mark on all who knew her and her memory will be cherished by those who loved her.
