Chiu-Lu “Becky” Hsu was born in the town of Tzu-Wei in Taoyuan, Taiwan, in 1930. She was the first of 13 siblings. She attended Tzu-Wei Elementary School and in a time when it was rare for girls to go further in school, Chiu-Lu was an exceptional student and graduated from a Taipei Girls Secondary School, the top school for Taiwanese residents in a time of Japanese occupation.
At the age of 17, she became a first and second grade teacher at Da-Nan Elementary School for two years, and then transferred to Taoyuan Elementary School where she taught for over 30 years. It was there Chiu-Lu met her first husband, Chuang-Huan Chiu, a fellow teacher. They married when Chiu-Lu was 22 years old in 1952 and had three children, Howard, Alice, and Albert, before Chuang-Huan passed away in 1959. Chiu-Lu married her second husband, Dr. Li-Kuo Hsu, in 1965, and they had two children, Frank and Richard.
She was a beloved teacher, one of the most popular at Taoyuan Elementary School where her students treasured her warmth, joyful spirit, and grace. They continued keeping in touch with her after many years. She taught several generations of students, and was considered a teacher extraordinaire at the school. After retiring from teaching in 1981, Chiu-Lu immigrated to the United States, moving to Orlando, Florida.
From 1992-94, Chiu-Lu became a teacher at the Chinese School of Central Florida, sharing her joy of Chinese songs with children. She had a commanding presence when teaching, always making the learning experience enjoyable and fun for all. In 1996, she returned to Taiwan to help run the family medical clinic with her husband, Dr. Li-Kuo Hsu, and daughter, Alice Chiu, until Dr. Hsu’s retirement in 2000 when Chiu-Lu and her family returned to the United States and lived in Florida, Oregon, and California to help raise their grandchildren.
Chiu-Lu was a trailblazer for her family in many ways. Chiu-Lu was the first one in her family to do many things, such as gain U.S. citizenship, and as the eldest sibling, she took care of many extended family members in the U.S. and Taiwan. She spoke several languages including Mandarin, Taiwanese, Japanese, and English. Chiu-Lu’s favorite hobbies included crocheting, dancing, singing, socializing, and shopping. She is survived in loving memory by her husband, five children and four daughter-in-laws, ten grandchildren and five grandchildren-in-laws, and six great-grandchildren.
