Gordon Campbell Atkinson, Jr.

Passed away peacefully on April 26, 2024 at his home in Newport Beach.

Gordy was born in Pasadena, CA to Dorothy Howarth Atkinson and Gordon C. Atkinson, Sr. He is survived by his daughter, Samantha A. Karson, Huntington Beach, CA; granddaughters, Hannah D. Karson (Mitch Webb) of Clackamas, OR. and Faith L. Karson (Becca Arko) of Wallingford, CT; his sister, Melanie A. La Pointe of Chandler, AZ; niece, Hillary Gurley (John), their sons, Will and Scott, of Phoenix, AZ; his brother, Howorth 'Spike" Atkinson (Loranne), of Montana; niece, Cyanna. He is also survived by his partner of 27 years, Victoria Solinger. Gordy was predeceased by his daughter, Ashley Atkinson in 2014.

Gordy attended South Pasadena High School, Cal Poly SLO and Pomona as well as New York University. He worked part-time in New York at Bloomingdale's.

Gary opened Atkinson's Men's Store on Lido in 1959 and moved it across the street from the Lido Theatre. Atkinson's was a very popular store and many young men in the area purchased their first Navy blazer or business suit in the store. Atkinson's was the "go to" place for Preppy and Traditional clothing and to meet up with friends and neighbors who stopped by to chat. Jim Rogers worked with Gordy for many years and the two of them where a powerful sales team!

Years later, many men were not wearing suits, tuxedos, and dress shirts. It was then that Gordy decided to close the store, retire and sell the building Atkinson's was in. When the store closed, Gordy took up his favorite hobby collecting antiques, Early California paintings, visiting flea markets, thrift stores and garage sales.

His collections included things such as airplane models, musical instruments, Civil War memorabilia, wind- up toys, banks and cars from the 30's and 40's, old surfboards and American Indian pottery.

In 2019 Gordy was diagnosed with Dementia. He never lost his sweet and kind personality and continued to enjoy his many male and female friends from all the over the U.S. and Europe.

May he rest in eternal peace.
