Joan passed peacefully on November 18, 2020 at age 97 with her family at her side. She was born in Glendale, CA where she grew up and spent her summers on Balboa Island. She graduated from Stanford University in 1945, (Biology, Pre-Med), Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Phi. Although she was accepted to Stanford Medical School in the fall of 1945, she chose instead to marry Lt. Cmdr. John deG LaMontagne on February 17, 1946 and, together, they had four children. Many years later, she went on to earn her PhD in Psychology from California Graduate
Institute becoming a much-loved psychotherapist.
Joan’s passion was understanding the path to Enlightenment and teaching this to others which she did through giving classes and writing many articles. She was a Graduate Guide for the Gateway to Conscious Evolution with Barbara Marx Hubbard and a Creating Health Educator at the Chopra Center for Well-Being.
Joan grew up sailing in the Balboa Island Yacht Club and subsequently sailed from California through the Panama Canal to Florida and then throughout the Caribbean with her husband on their own boat, S/V Queen Anne. She also sailed a Catalina 36 to Hawaii!
Music was in her soul and she played the piano at every opportunity throughout her long life. She was predeceased by her son, Stephen, and is survived by her three children, John, Anne, and David LaMontagne, grandchildren Tony, Michael, Daniel, Mimi, Lauren, Grace and Luc LaMontagne and great grandchildren Austin, Gavin, Ashley and Dagny LaMontagne. It was her greatest wish that she live long enough for her grandchildren to remember her – and she did!
We will miss our loving mother and wish for her eternal peace on her spiritual journey.
