William John Matheus, 98, of Seal Beach, California passed away peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2015 at his home in Seal Beach. A 5th generation Californian, Bill was born, raised, married and worked his entire life in Southern California. The middle child of three sons born in Los Angeles to Victor and Lillian Matheus on June 6, 1917, he is survived by his three children, Mary Ann (Thaxton), William, and Daniel. He has two grandchildren, Kristin and Bradley.
Earning a bachelors in business administration from Loyola Marymount University in 1939, Bill joined the military just prior to the U.S. involvement in WWII. First voluntarily joining the Navy as an Ensign, and then joined the Army in early 1941. Bill served as an officer with the Quartermasters Corps and was stationed for 5 years in the South Pacific on an island in the New Hebrides. Bill ultimately obtained the rank of Major in the US Army.
Arriving home he married and started a family in Southern California. Bill began his career as a merchandizing buyer for Sears & Roebuck in Los Angeles; a career that spanned 34 years. With a longing for the beach, Bill made his home in Huntington Beach for 30 years and then Seal Beach for 16 years. Retirement was good to Bill. It was not uncommon to see him strolling along Main Street, or chatting with locals on a bench by the pier.
Bill obtained great comfort from his Catholic faith. Serving his community as a Eucharistic Minister for over 10 years at St. Anne’s Church, Bill always maintained a modest profile. His caring disposition and kindness was infectious to everyone he met.
Few can lay claim to living thru the entire 20th century, and even fewer can do it with such grace. We will always remember, love and miss you Dad, Bill, Friend.
