

Agustín “Gus” Reyes, 88, went home to be with our Lord on March 9, 2017. Gus was born in Asherton, Texas on August 28, 1928 to José Maria and Francisca Rodriguez Reyes. He was raised in Asherton until the family moved to Corpus Christi. Agustín left school early to enlist in the US Marines at the age of 17 where he served in WWII from 1945 to 1948 with an honorable discharge. He married Gloria Garcia on February 9, 1952 and they had three sons. Agustín’s vocational career included entrepreneurial businesses and law enforcement as an officer with the Nueces County Sheriff’s Department, the Nueces County Deputy Constable’s Office, and the US Marshals Service. Gus loved to sing and was a founding member of the Deacons gospel quartet for 25 years. He also was a committed servant of the Lord through pastoral and lay leadership in Texas, California and Kentucky. Gus and Gloria led volunteer church planting and ministries through the Mission Service Corps of the Baptist General Convention of Texas in Kentucky, El Paso, and Mexico. Agustín was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers (José, Zaragosa, Juan, and Antonio), and his sisters (Leonor, Anita and Nicolasa). He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gloria Garcia Reyes, his sons (Agustín L. Reyes Jr (Leticia Lozano), Albert L. Reyes (Belinda Alvarado), Alfred L. Reyes (Sharon Suiter), nine grand-children, eight great grand-children and his sister Victoria Reyes Garza. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at Primera Iglesia Bautista (1509 Tarlton Street, Corpus Christi, Texas 78415) with an evening prayer at 7:00 p.m. that same evening. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at Primera Iglesia Bautista with interment to follow at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the South Texas School of Christian Studies for the Gus and Gloria Reyes Hispanic Leadership Endowed Scholarship.
