Al was born in Corpus Christi on July 30, 1941 to Gregorio and Guillerma Guevara. He enjoyed time as a child with his siblings Greg Jr. and Rosie. Al attended the local schools, including Carroll HS. Eager to start his own journey, he left High School early to enlist in the U.S. Navy, where he earned his GED. After basic training in San Diego, CA, Al returned to Corpus Christi to serve at the Naval Air Station. He concluded his military career after three years, not wanting to be separated from his family in the event of a distant deployment aboard ship.
Always ready for a new challenge, Al was employed in many professions, including with the Corpus Christi gas department; self-employed in home renovation and painting; as a manager with two equipment rental companies; co-owned with Lydia a bridal business; and held several jobs in sales. Al and Lydia later moved to Bryan, Texas where he worked his last five years before retirement at St. Joseph Hospital in the maintenance department (declared by him to be the best job he ever had!) He spent his remaining years in Rio Rancho, enjoying the company of family, celebrating his 80th birthday with dancing and Mariachis. Al was a 60 + year member of Lutheran (LCMS) churches in Corpus Christi, Bryan, and Rio Rancho.
Al was from an early adult age challenged by chronic health conditions which continued to worsen over the years, but he still managed to travel around the US and abroad to Europe. He enjoyed RVing and had a passion for vintage automobiles. He was skilled in carpentry, painting, auto repair, auto painting, and was an early adopter of reusing, repurposing, and recycling, often taking other’s “trash” and transforming it into a genuine treasure. Al will be forever remembered as a man of faith, peace, meticulous organization, forbearance, and love for his family.
Surviving Al to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years Lydia, children Al Jr. (Rebecca) of Rio Rancho, Robert (Diane) of Houston, TX, and Monique (Paul) of Rio Rancho; beloved sister Rosie Anzaldua (Paul) of Corpus Christi, TX; niece Jill Williams of Lewisburg, WV; Nephew Roland Ramos of Corpus Christi, nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives. Al is preceded in death by his parents Gregorio and Guillerma and big brother Greg.
