

Apolonio P. Montalvo, fondly known as Polo, passed away on Friday, May 9th surrounded by family. Polo was born and raised in the small town of Lyford,Texas. He attended school with the same 60 students from 1st grade through his graduation in 1961. He was raised on a home which was on 3 acres where they grew cotton, raised chickens and grew fruit and vegetables. They drank fresh unpasteurized milk from cows they milked daily. Polo's parents were Nieves and Manuela (Pena) Montalvo. His In-laws were Reymundo and Juanita (Garza)Oropez. He is survived by his wife Aida (Oropez) Montalvo of 58 years, his daughter Valerie Luna, his son-in-law Ubaldo Luna, his three grandsons Miguel, Justin, and Anthony Luna. He is survived by his siblings Eddie Montalvo, Ninfa Garza, Robert(Sylvia) Montalvo, Esmeralda Uribe, Nieves Jr.(Julie) Montalvo, several in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons: Miguel, Justin and Anthony Luna, His godson Mario Montalvo and his nephews David and Carlos Montalvo. Polo proudly served in the Army Signal Corps as a Switchboard operator. Serving as a Specialist (E-4) in the 7th Army's 16 Signal Battalion in Germany. After serving in the Army he married Aida in California where he worked for Alcoa, Kaiser Permanente and went on to proudly receive his Barber college certification. After an earthquake in 1971 he returned to Corpus Christ where he first worked alongside his older brother Rogelio "Roy" cutting hair. He then started with HEB until 2004 when he retired after 32 diligent years as a Dairy Department Manager.
He was a passionate bowler with over 50 years of League bowling. He bowled a perfect 300 game on his 68th birthday and a couple 299's afterwards. Polo looked forward to the pleasure and enjoyment of being with his friends talking and laughing. Bowling any high score was just an added bonus. Bowling took him, his wife Aida, brother Roy(Lily) and nephew Daniel Montalvo to several destinations across the country over the past decades. In retirement he ushered behind home plate for the CC Hooks for over 10 years where he enjoyed watching the games, and talking with players, owners, scouts and fans. Polo was a sportaholic following players from high school, through their collegiate into Professional sports:Especially following Football, Baseball, and Basketball as well as several other sports. He and Aida often traveled with their grandsons during the summer and even celebrated his 50th anniversary on an Alaskan cruise with them. Sharing summers and holidays with his grandsons, leaving them with an impression of his easy going personable nature. Polo never knew a stranger, because anyone whom he met would be treated like a well known friend, with a hearty handshake and a shared story that usually ended in laughter. He is joined in Heaven by his brother Roy, 2 days after leaving us.
A visitation for Apolonio will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Memory Gardens Funeral Home & Cemetery, 8200 Old Brownsville Road, Corpus Christi, Texas 78415. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, May 28, 2025 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, 8200 Old Brownsville Road, Corpus Christi, Texas 78415. An interment will occur Wednesday, May 28, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 2:25 PM at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery, 9974 I-37, Corpus Christi, Texas.
