She married Malcolm Groves as a teenager and as young parents, they committed their lives to Christ, worshipping with the Church of Christ wherever they lived. They had 4 children, 3 girls, and a boy who passed at the age of 6. They bought their first and only house in Corpus Christi, Texas where they raised their family. They were one of the founding families of the Windsor Park Church of Christ in 1954. They were always there when the doors were open. Mom was always being helpful, especially when it came to weddings, using her seamstress skills to make bridesmaid and flower girl dresses. As a stay-at-home mom, she used those skills to support the family, sewing professionally for hard-to-fit ladies. She also dressed her daughters and a school-age sister-in-law in dresses fit for princesses, eventually including 2 wedding dresses with veils. After her first husband passed just a few weeks before their 50th anniversary, she married Duyane Hindsley and enjoyed being a preacher's wife for 11 years until his passing.
Like most of us, our mom had hobbies and quirks. If one wanted to make points with her, the sure thing to do was spell her names correctly. Spell her first and middle names using the letter "e" at the end! She was an avid collector of all kinds of dolls, chosen for their stories from history or even fairy tales and favorite novels. She loved going to Golden Age Camps, specifically Bandina Christian Youth Camp in Texas and Yellowstone Bible Camp in Montana. She liked to make little booklets from the "Love is:" cartoons from the newspaper and would gift them to new brides and families with new babies. Potlucks were a favorite activity and as an extraordinary cook, she never took home leftovers. Mom was always happy to invite guests to join her----maybe because those who had guests got to take them to the front of the serving line! She also was first in line to volunteer to make meals for the sick and shut-ins. She also loved having visiting preachers over for meals. One of her favorites was when Marshall Keeble sat in her living room enjoying one of her delicious pies.
Bettye was pre-ceded in death by her parents, husbands Malcolm and Duyane, and special son Malcolm Nathan Groves, Jr., brother Arthur Garrett (Sonny) Gunn, Jr, sister Sue Edwards (Bill), sister Peggy Homeyer (Rex, M.J. Surviving Bettye are daughters Elizabeth Berry, Jennifer Cox (Bobby), Robin Jones (Howard), brother Danny Gunn, and sister-in-law Jean Gunn. Bettye was always proud to tell everyone about her grand-children, Robert Berry, Susan Corbeil (Tim), Scott Cox (Ian), Sandi St. Cyr (Brian), Paul Bowland (Cathy), and David Bowland (Brandi). She was equally ready to talk about her 7 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
