Clara is preceded in death by her parents Apolonia and Epitacio Gutierrez, husband David Tommy Garcia, daughters Carolyn Garcia and Cynthia M. Windham, son-in-law Ricky Lee Windham, eight sisters and three brothers.
Clara is survived by son Richard (Rick) Garcia (Alicia), daughter Catherine (Cooky) Fonseca (Xavier), granddaughters Alissa Garcia and Victoria Windham; granddaughters and grandsons Anthony Fonseca (Christina) and Ambrose Fonseca (Janet); great granddaughter Ariana Fonseca, and step-great grandkids.
Clara is also preceded and survived by many nieces, nephews and other loving relatives.
Clara was the eleventh of twelve children born to her parents. As an infant Clara contracted polio, which affected one of her legs, but that didn’t stop her from living a full life. She attended Guadalupe Catholic school, St. Patrick’s school and IWA in Houston.
Clara was mainly a loving wife most of her life but also worked at a candy making factory, clothing store, and a music store. In their teens, Clara, Lupe and Julia had a fruit stand called the “Three Sisters Fruit Stand”. It was at that time Clara met the love of her life Tommy. They were married October 16, 1949, at St. Patrick’s Church and remained married all their lives. Clara was a loving wife to Tommy for 71 years. Her loving devotion to her family was the strength that sustained the family’s coherence. Clara’s favorite passions included practicing her Catholic faith, and hobbies like cooking for her family, sewing, baking, crafting, gardening, playing bingo, watching her Houston football, baseball and basketball teams, and enjoyed trying her luck at scratch-offs.
Clara was an excellent cook and passed on her talent, so making tamales, menudo, cookies, and so many of her wonderful dishes without her, will be bittersweet and lovingly missed. She will be especially missed because she was always there for the family with her steadfast support, encouragement, Her daily prayers, and of course, her enormous love.
A future memorial mass will be scheduled and later announced for Clara Garcia in Houston, and internment for Clara and Tommy will follow at Forrest Park Lawndale in Houston Texas, 6900 Lawndale Street.
