Don Eason Blevins began his journey to heaven leaving us on Wednesday, May 4, 2017 at the age of 89. He was loved by family and friends alike and will be dearly missed. His memory will always be present in the hearts of his family. He raised his children in Portland, TX before moving to Corpus Christi, TX. Don was a good Christian man and was a long-time member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Corpus Christi.
Don was born on November 12, 1927 to Joe Bailey and Helen Marie Price Blevins in Rotan, Texas. His long-time passion beginning in middle school was playing the trumpet. He graduated from Rotan High School in 10 years and attended both Texas Tech and Hardin Simmons University where he was a member of the school bands playing the trumpet. He played in a number of group big bands and spent the summer before going into the Army playing in the Buddy Arnett Band at a club in Eagles Nest, NM which was a time he always recounted fondly. His sons, Jon and Bill, took him back to visit Eagles Nest in 2010. Much to his delight, the club was still there and still in use as a club.
He joined the Army on February 25, 1946 once he graduated from High School and turned 18. He proudly served for 18 months where he trained in anti-aircraft gunnery before eventually playing in the Army Band. He played during parades and at military functions and was often called on to play taps at funerals of soldiers. He was honorably discharged on August 24, 1947.
He went to work with Reynolds Metals Co. in 1953 and served as a Master Electrician at the SanPat plant until he retired.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Joe Allen and wife Marie Redmond Blevins, his first wife Barbara Anne Harrington Blevins who was the mother of their kids, and his 3rd wife Wanna Blevins.
He is survived by 5 children; Donna Anne Vickers of League City, TX, Joe Bill (Alice) Blevins of Fort Worth, TX, Virginia ‘Ginny’ Marie (Fred) Bergmann of Choctaw, OK, Don Allen (Dana) Blevins of Grand Prairie, TX, and Jon Price (Lynette) Blevins of Bloomington, TX; 10 grandchildren Tim Vickers, Brian Vickers, Greg Blevins, Joe Don Blevins, Debbie Miller, Mike Miller, Jason Blevins, Shawna Bradshaw, Amy Blevins, and Amanda Bonura; and 22 great-grandchildren Ashley Evans, Noah Vickers, Kreg Blevins, Erika Gonzales, Kane Blevins, Harlee Blevins, Blue Blevins, Mason Blevins, Trinity Blevins, Landon Hopkins, Chance Danderson, Lexa Danderson, Caleb Zimmerman, Trevor Blevins, Treston Blevins, Layla Summers, Paige Summers, Blaine Bradshaw, Bailey Bradshaw, Cade Baumbach, Luke Bonura and Jake Bonura.
Don was always known as a loving and caring person who was always there to offer a helping hand to anyone in need. He graciously loved his family and friends with an open heart and a warm welcome. During his life, he always loved to go out to be with people and go dancing right up until his illness prevented it. He loved life and was considered by all who knew him as a good man.
Thanks to all of his children and family for their love and support of their dad. Special thanks to his daughter Ginny who was his constant caregiver in her home his last few months. No one could have loved or cared for him better.
