Born on July 26, 1930, in New Braunfels, Texas, to Robert Julius Radke and Edna Mae Weller Radke, Esther’s life was defined by quiet strength. Coming of age during the Great Depression, she developed a work ethic and a sense of gratitude that stayed with her for nearly a century. She spent many years serving her community as a dedicated waitress and head cashier, where her unwavering generosity and sharp mind made her a favorite among colleagues and customers alike.
Esther was most at home when surrounded by family, whether she was out deer hunting or hosting a lively backyard barbecue. No family gathering was complete without her famous cakes and deviled eggs. She took immense pride in her home, meticulously tending to her yard well into her 70s; she only "retired" from the lawnmower when she felt she had finally found someone who could meet her high standards.
Throughout her 95 years, Esther witnessed the world change in ways many can only imagine, yet she remained constant. Whenever asked how she was doing, she would simply reply with a grin, “Still kick’n,” a phrase that never failed to bring a smile to those around her.
She was the beloved matriarch of her family and was preceded in death by her husband, David Mitchel Howard; her parents; and her siblings, Harlan Radke, Arthur Radke, Elwood Radke, and Robert Radke Jr.
She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will miss her deeply. Her life was a long-distance race run with grace, and she finished well.
