

James came from a large family of nine and was a loving son to his parents and a loving brother to his siblings. He was a high school graduate from Roy Miller High School and went to Del Mar College for one year. He went on to serve his country with the United States Army after being drafted into the Vietnam War and served until the age of 25.
James had a career with MHMR, helping many people, and worked for Coastal Plains. He was a devout Catholic and always attended Sunday Mass at Corpus Christi Cathedral. Later in life after his illness, he was sure to watch Mass on television on Sundays.
James is reunited with his parents, Waitus Floyd and Addie Smith; siblings, Louis Fetters, Charles Patrick Smith, Verlyn “Mike” Smith, Kathleen Toomes, and Donna Smith; and his niece, Rhonda Kae Toomes.
James leaves to cherish his memories his beloved sister, Mary Richardson and her husband Charles; sister-in-law, Kae Smith; nephews, Michael Richardson, Charles Patrick Jr., Bobby Lee Toomes, Donald Wayne Toomes, and Douglas Williams Toomes.
Rite of Committal and Interment with Final Military Honors will be held at 2 PM on Monday, June 15, 2024, at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
