Max was born in Tilden, Texas, on October 3, 1937, to parents Matilde Martinez Sr. and Jesusa Quintanilla. He was the fifth child of four brothers and six sisters.
In his early years, Max was a professional boxer, once braving a fight in the ring against George Foreman and valiantly taking a loss. Preceding that, he had served two years in the United States Army, being stationed in Germany from 1956 to 1958. This period of time shaped a lot of daily aspects in his life. Max learned as much as he could throughout his life, from welding to working on cars, to ranching, and even gardening.
Max will be remembered as a hardworking man, who sometimes lovingly worried too much about his family and friends. Despite this, he could always put his worries aside to enjoy a Whataburger or visit his Taqueria ladies at Taqueria Jalisco #12. Alongside his wife, he had been a devout Catholic, being a participating member in the Knights of Columbus, supporting many charities, and becoming well known as a parishioner at St. Patrick Catholic Church for his daily commitment to attending mass.
Max was a caring husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and brother and is survived by his three children, Ralph Edward (Nora) Martinez of Harlingen, Texas, Rey Roland Martinez, and Ronee Marie Martinez of Corpus Christi, Texas; six grandchildren, Cassandra (Cesar) Perez of Corpus Christi, Texas, Christina Martinez of Houston, Texas, Cyndi Sue Martinez, Celina (Ruben) Raye Ramirez of Corpus Christi, Texas, Jonathon Rey Martinez, Johnny Alexander Martinez of Corpus Christi, Texas; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Max is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ofelia C Martinez; parents, Matilde Martinez Sr. and Jesusa Quintanilla; two brothers, Apolinar Martinez and Luciano Martinez; four sisters, Eva Villarreal, Sarah Gutierrez, Noemi Arisola, and Anita Martinez; and one grandchild, Clarissa Jane Martinez.
Visitation for Max will be held from 5 PM until 9 PM on Friday, May 3, 2024 at Memory Gardens Funeral Home, with a Holy Rosary to be recited that same night at 7 PM. Continued Visitation will occur at 9 AM on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10 AM. Entombment will immediately follow the Funeral Mass and will be held at Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
