Naomi Marjorie Barry Archer was born in Brooklyn, NY, on September 27, 1929, to John and Marjorie Barry. She was brought up and educated in Carlow, Ireland and Liverpool and Hull, England. From University College Dublin she graduated in Medicine (M.B. 1952), later M.D. in USA. In 1952 she married Leslie, also a physician and had entrance into their seven decades together.
In the same year Leslie and Naomi immigrated to the USA. Her medical Internship was in Rochester, NY. She mothered their four children and then raised them in Quito, Ecuador, (during two years in Mission Hospital work at HCJB Hospital, Voz Andes), and then in the Panama Canal Zone. For many years Naomi was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Women’s Missionary Fellowship of Curundu Protestant Church in Panama; she also participated in medical trips to missions of Panama’s interior.
Naomi then returned to medical practice via the Women’s College of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA, becoming Board Certified in Family Practice, and a Family Practitioner at Memorial Medical Center, Corpus Christi, TX from the mid 1970’s to the mid 1980’s.
Naomi loved her patients, and made time for active support of Medical Missions and Mission friends, plus short term clinics in the Dominican Republic. She also had a deep compassion for all animals -- especially birds and panda bears. She adored flowers -- their colors, textures, patterns, smells. Her favorite flowers were the Star Gazer Lily and the Bird of Paradise. She loved good nutrition and seeing where and how food was grown, cared for, and harvested. She found much good humor and laughter in Leslie’s gift for mimicking accents and expressions. She was a woman of persistent prayer for her children, grandchildren, and many more -- especially for the people of China.
“Naomi was,” said, Leslie, “the solid pillar of my life: Lovely, Loving and my Love.”
She had a deep concern for the youth -- teaching Release Time Bible School in NY and backing Child Evangelism Fellowship in Corpus Christi. She was actively involved in the Corpus Christi Interdenominational Community Bible Study which brought her friends from many churches, including Second Baptist, where she was a member for years, and in recent years she was a member of Windsor Park Baptist Church.
Her abiding faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus, she summed up in His own words: “I am the Resurrection and the Life; she who believes in me shall live even though she dies; and she who lives and believes in Me will never die.”
Naomi now knows this is true.
Naomi died at home overlooking Oso Bay. She is survived by husband, Leslie; brother, Kevin; children, Anne, Nuala, Philip, Stephen; daughter-in-law, Rose, grandchildren, Keegan, Amanda, Micaela, Benjamin, Aidan. All sorely miss her smile.
Please send no flowers. Donations in Naomi’s honor may be made to Wycliffe Bible Translators or Good Samaritan Rescue Mission.
Memorial Service will be held at Funeraria Del Angel Memorial Holly on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 3:00 p.m.
