

He was a great husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, friend to many, and phenomenal Musician. He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Oralia (Perez) Vela; his son, Eladio Vela and wife, Norma; Oscar Vela Jr. and wife Irma; his daughter Norma Vela; and son, Eddie Vela and wife Cyndi. Grandchildren: Omar Vela, Ann Marie Vela, Adelene Nicole Vela-Tellez and husband Joe, Jennifer Amanda Vela, Michael Anthony Vela, Eddie Vela Jr., and many nieces, nephews, and countless friends that are appreciated like family.
Born and raised in Paras Nuevo Leon, Mexico, the son of Benigno Vela and Jovita (Anaya) Vela. He came to Corpus Christi in 1956, and became a pioneer accordion player of Conjunto music and lead band member of Los Tremendos Hermanos Vela, well known for their boleros. His passion for music took him all over Mexico and Texas, playing at Weddings, Holidays, and special events.
He was also a local business owner of Vela’s Furniture and Upholstery shop for 25 years. He supported the local community through his work in the furniture business and his music.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at Memory Gardens Funeral Home with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00pm that same evening.
As a longtime member of Holy Family Catholic Church a Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, April 28 at !0:00am. Interment to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
One of his favorite sayings was: “El que tiene pierde y el que no tiene pierde de tener.” Nosotros perdemos en no tenerlo.
