

CORPUS CHRISTI - Pura Vela Barrera, loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, aunt, and great-aunt was called to the Lord on May 1, 2023. She was born on April 3, 1934 in Ciudad Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico. She was the second oldest of five sisters, born to Paula Ibañes and Celestino Vela. On October 13, 1951 she married her first and only love, Arsenio Barrera. They lived in Ciudad Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico, in Los Angeles, California, and finally made their home of over 60 years in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Pura was preceded in death by her parents, Paula Ibañez, and Celestino Vela; a daughter, Purita Barrera; and a daughter-in-law, Rosalinda Barrera.
Pura is survived by her husband, Arsenio Barrera Sr.; her children, Dalila Peña (Manuel Oziel), Arsenio Barrera Jr., and Casimiro Barrera Sr.; her five sisters, Olga Ramirez, Antonia Saucedo, Rosanelia Martinez, Esperanza Aguirre; as well as her grandchildren, Manuel, David, Alberto, Yaneth, Casimiro Jr., Celestino; 15 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Pura’s pride and joy was her family. She enjoyed spending time with them and helping celebrate holidays and their numerous special family occasions. She was an excellent homemaker and seamstress. Her favorite hobby was gardening and all her fruit trees, plants and flowers flourished under her loving care.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 from 4 PM to 7 PM, with a rosary to be recited at 7 PM that same evening in Memory Gardens Chapel. A funeral service will be conducted there as well at 10:00 am on Thursday, May 11, 2023. Private burial to be held at a later date.
