Pete had two careers, both of which he thoroughly enjoyed. In 1941, he joined the Army Artillery and later became a Master Parachutist. He saw action in the Pacific, China, Japan, Korea and Australia. He retired as a major in 1961. Pete made and kept many friends from his time in the service.
After the Army, he went back to school in Oklahoma and obtained a Master’s Degree. He taught American History at Del Mar College from 1965 till 1989. Pete rarely went anywhere without being greeted warmly by a former student, who would laughingly remind him of how he ended the last class of the semester.
Pete joined the Masonic Lodge as a young soldier. He became a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and a Shriner. He was also a member of the Sojourners.
Pete was previously married to LaVeta Durham and adopted her son, Donald, both of whom predeceased him. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren by Don live in New Hampshire and New Jersey. In 1984, Pete married his current wife, Peggy, and became “Pop” to her two children, Timothy Hubbard and Holly Treen. Holly gave him a granddaughter (Meaghan). Tim gave him two grandsons (Remington and Parker) and a granddaughter (Danica), as well as bringing Macy into the family as his wife. Pete took on the role of a father and was there with love and unconditional acceptance.
Anyone who knew Pete would testify that he never met a stranger and loved to engage people in conversation. Among his favorite things were laughing, reading, playing cards, traveling, eating anything sweet, and spending time with special friends, all of whom have their own favorite “Pete stories” to tell.
Pete was active in his church, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Corpus Christi, which will hold a memorial for him at a later date. At this time, there will be visitation at Cage-Mills Funeral Directors on February 4, 2013, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A private burial service will follow at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that “Pete stories” be shared.
