

James was born on July 7, 1937 to the late Howard and Faye (Hodges) Hartley. James spent many years working as the Produce Manager at Browns IGA, known to many as the “Fruit Basket King.” He also spent many years as an employee of General Electric, working many different positions throughout his employment. On January 22, 1956, he married Doris Eckelberry, who preceded him in death on October 24, 2008. James was an involved member of the First Baptist Church of West Lafayette, helping out with various church activities. James had a passion for gardening, drawing, and country music. He also loved Elvis Presley and was an avid OSU fan.
James is survived by two daughters: Janice (Greg) Porcher and Theresa (Rodney) Norman; four grandchildren: Rich (Mandy) Porcher, Rachelle (James) Gano, Jerrod (Kayla) Norman, and Allison (Kory) Parks; six great-grandchildren: Presley Porcher, Brielle and Brendan Gano, and Luna, Neville, and Phineas Norman; one brother, David Hartley, two sisters, Mary Jo Tedrick and Jeanette Waters, one aunt, Betty Jo Casey, one sister-in-law, Marjorie Griffith, and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his wife and parents, James is preceded in death by his two daughters, Janet and Diane Hartley.
Funeral services for James will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 22, 2016 at Given-Dawson Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Brodbeck officiating. Burial will follow at Plainfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at the funeral home from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
