

James graduated from Aquinas High School in Columbus, and then from The Ohio State University with several Bachelor’s Degrees in History and Education. He traveled while teaching in New South Wales, Australia, and then moved to Coshocton, Ohio to work at AEP where he retired. James was a member of the American Legion, the National Rifle Association, and was a member of a steam engine society where he enjoyed going to conventions and talking about history. He was an avid reader and a life-long learner.
James is survived by his two step-daughters Leslie (Ernie) Zimmerman of Coshocton and Sandi (Kyle) Decot of New Lexington. He is also survived by seven grandchildren Shane Art, Travis Zimmerman, Ben Zimmerman, and Haley Zimmerman, Jacob Wells, Mason Decot, and Bella Decot. James is also survived by his siblings Steve Leonard and Mary Leonard, both of Columbus, and nephew Sean (Ellie) Leonard of Lee's Summit, Missouri and their children Beckett and Everly.
James was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 24 years Dixie Leonard who passed away exactly four years before James on December 23, 2017. He was also preceded in death by his brother Mike Leonard.
Per the family’s wishes, a cremation will take place. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
