

John was born on September 30, 1929 to the late John C. and Helen R. (Hackett) Ayers in Wellsburg, West Virginia. He attended West Liberty College and graduated from Marshall University with two degrees in education. On July 29, 1950, John married Irene Gorby. In 1954, John started his career as a teacher and coach in Coshocton. He coached football, golf, and basketball (Boys and girls) for many years. During his years at Coshocton, he helped lead the Coshocton Redskins to two State Titles in golf and was inducted into the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Golf Hall of Fame in 1998. John had over 500 wins while coaching Coshocton Middle School basketball. John retired from teaching after 34 years but continued to coach for many more years. John stayed active after his retirement by working for Sports Medicine Grants and running golf tournaments for the Ohio Athletic Association. John was also the City Recreation Director of Coshocton. Along with woodworking, John enjoyed attending Coshocton City School events with his wife Irene.
Along with his wife, John is survived by one son, John R. (Kristine) Ayers, one daughter, Beth Schott, one brother, Don Ayers, 7 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for John will be held at Given-Dawson Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Sonny Easterday officiating. Burial will follow at Coshocton County Memory Gardens. Calling hours will take place at the funeral home on Monday, December 28, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
