
John Wesley Dawson, age 94, of Coshocton, passed away Monday, August 12, 2013. John was born July 16, 1919 to Floyd Everett and Bessie (Tubbs) Dawson. On October 7, 1941, he married Ida Louise Underwood, who preceded him in death on February 3, 2013. John served in World War II from November 7, 1942 to May 27, 1947. He served as the Commanding Officer of the Coshocton Ohio National Guard 37th Recon Company 37 Uniform Division from 1947 to 1953. John was called back to active duty with the 37th Recon 37th Uniform Division for the Korean Conflict. He went back to Ohio National Guard status upon his return from active duty, finally retiring from military status July 16, 1979. He was the owner and agent of Underwood Insurance Agency from 1955 to 1982. John was a life member of the Coshocton Elks Lodge #376 as well as a past Exalted Ruler, past Trustee, and past Lodge Secretary. He served as the Chairman of the Stadium Committee for Coshocton High School Football Stadium and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. John is survived by son, Kenneth (Leslie) Dawson; daughter, Muncy (Tom) Eaton; four grandchildren, Scott (Jeannie) Eaton, Amy (Chad) Harrison, Erin (Brian) Miller, and Jeffrey Dawson; seven great grandchildren, Jordan, Kristin and Colt Eaton, Ross, Sydney and Conner Harrison, and Addison Miller. In addition to his wife and parents, John is preceded in death by one grandson; one brother, James E. Dawson; and one sister, Avenella Dawson. A funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Given-Dawson Funeral Home on Friday, August 16, 2013 at 2:00 pm with Reverend Jan Coffman officiating. Burial will follow at Coshocton County Memory Gardens. Calling hours will be one hour prior to the service.
