

Bergen was born in Columbus on March 30, 1933 to the late Lloyd Byron and Katherine (Reiser) Dunlap. Bergen enlisted and served in the United States Air Force in the early 1950s. He spent most of his life working as a Hot Rod builder. Bergen loved building cars and he would plan his summers around car shows. He also loved airplanes and model trains.
Bergen was a member of the Eagles, the VFW, the Army Navy and a founding member of the Hood Lifters Car Club. Bergen, along with Bill Lehr, was a founding member of The Shadows, which later became Phil Dirt and the Dozers.
Bergen is survived by his son, Ronnie (Jean Ann) Dunlap, his daughter, Jody (John) Povsche, four grandchildren: Hartley Dunlap, Sidney Dunlap, Rusty Povsche, and Joe Povsche; one step-grandchild, Pete (Toni) Leach, his cousin, Jake Andrews, honorary grandchild, Jared Lapp, and the mother of his children, Velma McCombs.
A memorial service for Bergen will be held at Given-Dawson Funeral Home on Monday, May 9, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Ric Bonice officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Chapel Cemetery. Calling hours will be held prior to the memorial service on Monday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
