Erik Richards Kingaard was born February 14, 1955 in La Jolla, CA and left us too soon on January 29, 2023 at the age of 67. Southern California was home, and he resided and worked in Orange County for almost four decades. His early years were spent in Del Mar, CA where he held the distinction of being the baby of seven.
An avid reader and student of American History, Erik received his bachelor’s degree from UCI in Irvine, CA. He was never without a book in his possession, and as a little boy would read whatever was handy at the moment, including cereal boxes and comic books. When he decided to dedicate himself to a topic, he became totally immersed, checked out every library book on a chosen subject, and as a result became an expert on honey bees, American Indians and more. His intellect was sharp and observant, his fighting spirit to defy the odds to survive four bouts of cancer was heroic, and his love for his son, Alex, was an inspiration.
Erik spent ten years as a self-employed private investigator, followed by 25 years for an Orange County law firm. When not working, his passion for sailing became a recreation for both him and his son, and decades-long friendships were made at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Corona Del Mar. He was happiest on the water and participating in regattas as a valued crew member. Many memories were made for his entire family at the Annual Club Christmas Party, Mother’s Day Luncheons, and Easter Sunday celebrations, where at every event he would bring a corsage for each sister, a touching and heartfelt gesture from their baby brother.
Erik was pre-deceased by his Parents, Alexander Richards Kingaard and Rena Josephine (Barham) Kingaard, Sister Andrea (Kingaard) Friedman and Brother Jon Kingaard. He is survived by his son, Alexander Kingaard, Granddaughter Harmony Kingaard, Sisters Karen (Kingaard) Kaenel, Alexa Kingaard, Ingrid Kingaard, and Sherry Horen, Nephews Christopher Holmes, Robert Horen, Christopher Horen, Matthew Kaenel, Nieces Erin Holmes, Kari Parker, Lisa Doezie, Alexandra Rey and Beth Wells, Companion, Laurie Johnson, plus many great-nieces and nephews and cousins.
A private memorial and scattering of ashes off the coast of Newport Beach, CA will take place at a future date, as well as off the coast of Nantucket, MA in late April.
