Irene Ellen Chavez, 77, of Santa Ana, California, entered Heaven’s gates on Monday, January 27, 2014. Irene was born in Oceanside, California on March 25, 1936. She was the daughter of John and Sally Cortez, and sister to Edward, Genevieve, Carmen, Robert, Richard, Anita, Dolores, and John Jr.
Irene met the love of her life, Mickey Chavez, in the summer of 1946 while they were both picking prunes with their families. When Irene met Mickey, she knew he was the one. At only ten years old, she told him “I’m going to marry you!” Mickey, with confusion in his face, replied “you’re crazy!” Irene knew it, and she was right. They were married on September 21, 1957. They were married for 56 years.
Irene Chavez is survived by her husband Mickey Chavez, and family members Robert, Genevieve, Carmen, Anita, Dolores; her children Kent Gerard, Bruce William, Deborah Ann Marie; her grandchildren Kent William, Gilbert Anthony, Emily Jayne, Serena Marie; and great-grandson Ryder Delane.
Irene was a vivacious woman. Her smile and contagious laughter drew people in like a magnet and that was apparent in everything she was involved in, from cheerleading during her high school years, to working as a cosmetics buyer for 30 years, to managing her own day care for 20 years (Renee’s Corral). She enjoyed taking care of children. One of her favorite phrases was “laka, laka, laka.” She was passionate about life and those around her, spoiling everything she touched. Irene will be missed by many, but her love will always remain and her smile and laughter always in our hearts.
