Rita was born on March 22, 1932 in New Haven, Connecticut. Her parents were Philip and Toby Kramer and she had an older sister, Edith. She met the love of her life, Sherman, when she was 13 and fell off her bicycle in front of his house. They married in 1952 and honeymooned in Havana, Cuba.
Rita is survived by two daughters, Philippa and Jan, son-in-laws, Mike and Jeff, and two beloved grandchildren, Tyla and Mason.
Rita influenced many people’s lives as a pre-school teacher, as Camp Mother at Camp Laurelwood and as an activist in Pioneer Women. She kept long-lasting friendships, some for 80 years, dating back to her Legion Avenue days. She loved roller-skating, playing ping-pong, bridge and mahjong and cherished the friends she made from these activities. She loved to travel and was selected to represent Pioneer Women to research nursery schools on a trip to Israel in 1965.
Everyone loved her. She had a way about her that brought joy to people, whether it was listening to homesick kids at camp, calming a pre-school parent about their child, or glowing as she listened to her kids and grandkids.
Rita and Sherman had over 70 years together, and Sherman made her laugh throughout her life up until the very end.
She had a deep love for animals, especially dogs, so if you are so inclined, in lieu of flowers, you can kiss your dog or make a contribution in her memory to:
