Roberta June Cowley, known to all as Bobbie, past peacefully into eternity on the morning of June 27th. Born to Glen & Ida Garverick in the front bedroom of the family’s general store in West Point Ohio on June 18th 1924, Bobbie had a typical rural childhood. She often said that she didn’t know they were poor because everybody in town was poor. Bobbie attended Brea College in Kentucky, leaving after 2 and half years to join the Navy. Assigned to give a speech in class supporting the service of women in the military, Bobbie succeed in persuading herself if no one else. She served in the United States Women’s Naval Reserves (WAVES). “Join the Navy, See the World”, was the Navy slogan, she joked, as she was stationed only 80 miles from her home. But it was at this posting after the war that she met the love of her life Robert Cowley. Coming to California for their honeymoon they decided to move here permanently, ultimately settling in Costa Mesa in 1955. After retirement, Bob & Bobbie spent their time and energy volunteering for American Cancer Society, Friends of the Court, Meals on Wheels, The Freedom Committee as well as their church.
Bobbie is survived by daughters Gayle Murray & Raylene Hadley, grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of friends all of whom will miss her spirit, courage, humor and grace.
Rest well, Mom, you earned it!
