Dr. Petri was my favorite teacher and the only teacher to ever make me even enjoy history, he would allow me to come to his classroom on lunch breaks as I had nowhere to go. You will be deeply missed Dr. Petri thank you for making an impact on me and my future. I know you touched many lives and will forever be missed.

My heat is so heavy hearing of Scott's passing. I had the wonderful change to connect with Scott on quite a few social studies adventures and he always had such a smile and wonderful wit.

Scott Petri was the best high school teacher I've ever had. I remember when I first enrolled in his class, I was the only student that read the assigned summer reading and finished the book by the time classes started. I think he saw the dedication I had immediately and consistently encouraged me to excel in all my classes. He encouraged me to take AP U.S. History and was a huge supporter of my academic journey.  In Petri's class, he was the first teacher to ever let me create a graphic novel that allowed me to use my artistic skills. Even when I wasn't in his class anymore, he was such a cool teacher to talk to.  By the time we graduated in 2020, I remember seeing him attend our drive-thru graduation and me making the joke of getting my diploma and going home. 

After graduating from Kennedy, my mom and I met him a few times for lunches to catch up. He'd have the best stories to tell that would always make us laugh. My mom worked with Petri and told me how he helped her with computer issues or just be a buddy to talk to. She would rave about how awesome this man was. 

I was also so lucky to have the chance to meet his amazing family, Sheila, Sarah, and Mars. Everyone has such a big heart in that family. 
I'm so saddened by the loss of this amazing, funny, kind man. I will miss him dearly.

I’m extremely saddened by Mr. Petri’s passing.  My daughter was a student of his during her high school years.  I meet him at open house night , he stood out to me for his care and interest for each of his students.   He knew every single one of them by name and took the time to speak to each of the parents about the progress of their kids.  He praised and always encouraged my daughter to be her best.  She loved him and even after now 4 years of her graduating from Kennedy she still remember him as the best teacher she ever had.   His death shook her, I will forever be greatful to him because his words of encouragement stuck to her through her college years.  My deepest condolences to his wife and daughters, please know he was a great human being.

Scott inspired so many teachers like me. I made sure I went to any of his sessions at CCSS and to his workshops at Los Angeles County Office of Education. Teachers wanted to be like him, and he showed us how. He will be very missed, and my thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.

You truly were one of the educators that changes lives. You changed mine. For the 4 years of highschool, having you as a homeroom teacher was the best experience of it all. Your ability to make us laugh and smile when all we wanted was to sleep and chat to one another, you always found a way to grab the attention of everyone in the room. You would have private conversations with us, asked how we were doing if you thought we looked sad, and even spoke about your family and life experiences not like we were your students, but like we were your friends. You were my mentor Petri. You were my friend. 

I will always remember how you would always say you'd never forget me because your daughter and I have the same name and same last initial. At the time I thought it was just funny to think we had the same initials, but now i hold dear sentiment to the notion that we shared something other than the school itself. 

I remember how you asked me to stop by your class after i had graduated to give a presentation on college. It was so excited to see you again and help be a part of the new students you were teaching. I think back to it all the time. 

My younger brother even had you for history. Granted, he said your class was hard, but you never failed to make him smile. It makes me so happy that my younger brother was able to experience your light before graduating from Highschool as well. 

I give you a lot of credit for where I am at today. When i decided to start college applications last minute and needed letters of recommendations and another set of eyes on my personal statements, you were there to help me through it. You weren't happy I was nagging you or waited till last minute to do everything, but you helped me regardless. You said Id make a good lawyer, and now thats my chosen career path. You helped me get to where I am today. 

Thank you Petri.  I will miss you everyday, and thank you for everything.

I met Scott when I was 17 working at an Irish Pub in Carlsbad called Dooley McCluskey’s. We became good friends and were part of the same fun crowd. Our group had lots of good times together whether it was a concert, a party, or just hanging out (or taking our chances in Mexico 😎). Scott was a great friend and always there for me. He was my honorary alternate bride’s maid at my wedding and was willing to squeeze into a size 6 dress should one of my attendants not be able to fulfill her duties. Scott and my husband also became good friends which just made our friendship richer. Scott later met his love Shiela, and he settled down too. He was so excited to become a dad and loved his girls like no other. Through the years we would get together with our families and catch up. Even if a lot of time had gone between visits, we just picked up where we left off. I was lucky enough to see Scott about 6 months ago when he was in town for a concert. He was the same smart, funny, happy-go- lucky person I’ve always known. I will miss him terribly. My heart goes out to Shiela, Sarah, Sammy and all of his family. RIP friend.

Dr. Petri took us to see Hamilton back in 2022 after we graduated Kennedy, showing that his avid love for history expanded outside of the classroom. I never really was a fan of history (let alone US history)- until I met Dr. Petri. For example, the last project he gave us before COVID hit was to make a rap or poem based on a historical document. This idea was inspired, of course, by the broadway musical, Hamilton. “Boring” was not in Dr. Petri’s vocabulary- he made sure to keep things fun and creative.  

His former students will never forget his genuine talent for making them feel heard and understood. It didn’t matter what kind of kid you were- he will listen. He is the kind of teacher that will recognize your achievements and make sure you are aware of them too- both big and small. If every teacher were like Petri, the world would be a much better place. In an area that needed education the most, Dr. Petri delivered and more.

Words cannot express the sadness that I feel. From helping me  to pass my English class with Mr. Ford in 11th grade to sharing your lessons on Latin American Revolutions with me just this past fall, and everything that you accomplished in between, you inspire me. 

Perhaps I didn’t tell you that enough.

I consider myself fortunate to have had you as my neighbor and friend growing up; drive-in movies, jumping off the roof into the pool, and watching scary movies late into the night, even though I know you hated them :). Time, distance, and life happened, but I am so grateful that we were able to reconnect recently through our love of education and passion for teaching.

I will miss your smile, your laugh, your wit, your creative ideas, and your willingness to be there with a great idea in a heartbeat. You will always hold a special place in my heart.

Scott was my neighbor. He and his wife Sheila were the kindest and most friendly neighbors I've ever had. We became fast friends and shared many meals together. I cant say enough about Scott; warm, friendly and always laughing and smiling.  He will be missed by so many. My heart breaks for him and Sheila and the girls💔 May he rest in peace.

Scott Petri will be sorely missed by both his former students and colleagues from Kennedy High school. We will always remember him for his kindness, his sincerity, his humor and his dedication, but mostly for his undying love of teaching. He had a unique gift that inspired young people to go beyond their limitations and to not settle for just  being average—to not only give history their best effort, but also English, science, math and everything else besides.
He was a wonderful human being and we will miss him much more than mere words can ever express.

In memory of the most thoughtful and caring teacher I have had the honor of learning from. 

For every student there is one or two teachers who have such an enormous impact on them that it shapes the kind of people they become in life. For most, that teacher comes up earlier in life and influences their educational experience. For me, Dr. Petri is that teacher. Though I loved learning, I never truly appreciated it until I was given the opportunity to learn from him. Nearly all teachers love what they do but Dr. Petri is on a different level. No matter what I wanted to learn about he was excited to talk to me about it. From lessons about the radium girls to Hamilton, Dr. Petri took to teaching like a moth to a flame. No one even comes close to the passion and love for education that Dr. Petri has. He shaped the world for so many and will continue to do so for years. His kindness and compassion continue to echo in everything I do, even five years after his class. 

Dr. Petri is one of a kind—he is wild and funny but one of the most thoughtful people at the same time. The thought that when I next go onto Twitter I won’t see a new tweet from him or that I won’t ever be able to reach out for advice breaks my heart but it is the memories I made in his classroom that make me smile during those moments. 

Dr. Petri, thank you for being the person you are. While I only learned from you for half a semester before Covid hit, you made the largest impact in my life. I hope that you know just how many students you impacted and how many of us are reminiscing on every moment spent in your classroom. Thank you for your passion, care and support. 

To his amazing family that he spoke about any chance he got, I hope the love his students, friends and colleagues have been sharing gives you even a small amount of comfort. He spoke about all of you with such adoration and love that I sometimes felt like he might burst. May his memory live on forever and may it always bring you comfort.

I miss Scott; his infectious smile, wealth upon wealth of teacher knowledge, and his sweet, sweet spirit. I always enjoyed my time talking and hanging out with Scott. He was always encouraging. Always fun. And always real. And I’m grateful that he introduced me to Shelia and Mars as I was passing through town last summer. I hope that you find peace in all of the beautiful memories that you have shared.

The education world lost a bright light but his impact and legacy will last an eternity. 

Thanks to an brief encounter at a CCSS Conference in the early years of my career I got to meet one of the most dynamic, funny, smart, passionate educators and humans.  Throughout the years Scott & I's paths crossed at  PDs, webinars, and conferences then we began our once a year lunch tradition which sadly didn't happen the last couple of years due to our schedules.  

We shared a love of food, our families (he loved them so much and was so proud of their accomplishments), history and local SoCal history. 

Seeing Scott at conferences was something to see, talking to almost everyone making them feel seen / heard, laughing, looking annoyed, checking in people - he seemed to pop into every presentation cheering educators on -

I just wanted to share how much I will miss Dr. Petri's support. I worked with him as a teacher at Kennedy and he was someone I could always turn to when I needed help at an event or wanted to share a teaching practice I was struggling with. For the last few years we would have a Harvest festival and Halloween maze on campus and he would volunteer every year and bring his kids to join in on the fun. He was an important part of our campus and we miss him every day.

Deeply saddened my dear friend has left us too soon but comforted and moved by all the touching tributes.  Last time we got together I was in Santa Clarita for a swim meet and we met for lunch.  I pitched a book idea for him to write—The Comedy of History.  Previous to his educational pursuits, Scott co-authored the book Writing the Comedy Film: Make 'em Laugh.  I remember his sly grin as I said, “You have written about the history of comedy, now you need to write about the comedy of history!”  He loved the silly idea and I could see his mind churning as his eyes twinkled with delight as he would do back in our LA days of kicking story ideas around.  I loved his twinkle, his warmth, his wit and most of all his heart.  Sending love and prayers to the girls.

Scott was one of those friendly faces and kindred "trouble-maker" spirits at conferences and social studies gatherings. Good trouble. While we did not ever teach at the same school, I connected with Scott across many years at these events (SCSSA, CCSS, Constitution Day...). We often laughed together and conspired around civic education when we connected. I cherish his playfulness, curiosity, and strength of mind and spirit. He will be missed.

 In short, a rare singing sled dog energized and motivated other dogs at critical moments with her song. When she passed, other dogs on the team picked up the song - and it turned into a singing team of sled dogs.

Scott found ways to be joyful amid hard work - teaching, higher education, civic engagement - and to inspire joy in others doing hard work. The memories and celebrations I've seen for and about him these last few days show others picking up the song - perpetuating joy amid hard work.  A tribute to Scott's legacy.

Scott was one of the brightest souls I've ever met, in both spirit and intellect. We met while we were both working at Disney in the 90s. He was the executive assistant to the head of our department--an arduous assignment. Yet, he became a magnet for everyone in the office during his time there, and he won over a tough boss with his quick wit, sarcasm, and brilliant attitude.

It didn't take long before he and I started hanging out in our free time. He spent a lot of time with me and my family and I enjoyed the variety of our conversations--from heady political debates to snarky cultural commentary.

I watched Scott conquer some of his demons, find love, start a family, and pursue a new calling. Though we saw each other a lot less,  we connected occasionally on social media. It was a joy to watch him thrive as an educator and to see the outpouring of gratitude and appreciation from his students.

It saddens me deeply that we have lost him so soon. My heart is broken. He was one of those friends that make a difference in your life, and you don't realize how much until they are gone. My thoughts are with his family. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am at a complete loss of words. Dr. Petri was one of the kindest and most caring teachers I have ever had. He cares about his students and wanted to know who they were. This picture we took was when he had invited me to go with his class to watch Hamilton the musical. I was no longer in his class or one of his students but he knew how much I loved it and invited me to come help with his class. Dr. Petri always had an open door policy where we could come into his class room before school, lunch, and after school. He always made everyone feel safe, listened to and cared for. My condolences to his family and friends.

I valued collaborating with Scott through twitter and chats for so many years. It was always a pleasure to chat and discuss civics and quality teaching.  We had had drinks an exchanged books the last time I saw him in person  and It was such a pleasure to meet in person . I will miss him and knowing that we were fighting the good fight for change we believed in.

You were my homeroom teacher for all 4 years of high school. I immediately took comfort in your presence as you never failed to check in on me and what was going on in my life. At the end of my senior year you mentioned how great it was to have seen me grow throughout all of high school, even during quarantine. I could confidently say the same about you.

It was refreshing to know that you remembered small details about me, consistently asking me how my jewelry business was coming along, and how you’d greet me by calling me an entrepreneur. 

After graduating high school I ran into you when LAUSD went on strike where we would remain in contact from then on. I will forever be grateful that you helped me with my transferring process from community to UCSD, I give you a lot of credit for where I am in my life. You were a role model who would remind me to continue pushing and fighting for what I wanted in this life. 

I will miss your jokes and laughter, your reassurance, and remember every memory we shared. Thank you for being a mentor for me, I hope you are happy wherever you are.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Scott IRL. We connected on Twitter likely during one of the many #sschat Twitter chats back in the day. I was constantly inspired by the things he was able to do with his students -- because as history teachers, we know (1) many students don't like history and (2) it's hard to get students motivated to deeply think about historical events. 

Scott reached out to me in 2019 about writing an article for the Social Studies Review. The fact that he thought I would have something worthwhile to contribute really meant a lot to me. From there, we chatted from time to time about working together on some other type of project, possibly doing research to document that historical thinking CAN and DOES occur in the classroom. 

I was so excited to see Scott take on a new adventure with the Bill of Rights Institute as they were getting a rockstar teacher! And, I loved seeing his smiling face on all the social media posts. Not having him around to promote history education and be a champion for teachers is a huge flow to our profession. 

He will be missed.

In Memory of Dr. Petri

Dr. Petri was one of the most remarkable educators I’ve had the honor of learning from during my years as a student. For four years, he served as my homeroom teacher, and in 11th grade, I had the privilege of being in his U.S. History class.

Walking into Dr. Petri’s classroom was often the highlight of my day. Whether he was playing a video or sharing music, his room was always filled with curiosity and warmth. Although I was more reserved in homeroom, he consistently made the effort to talk with me, to draw me out, and to make me feel seen. He had a heart of gold—one I’ve yet to encounter again.

What stood out the most in Dr. Petri’s teaching was his deep care for the often overlooked. He made a point to highlight the stories of underprivileged and marginalized individuals in history. That was the kind of person he was—someone who believed everyone deserved to be seen and remembered.

Even during the challenges of online learning, homeroom with Dr. Petri remained a favorite for me. He always brought humor, shared anecdotes, and checked in with each student. He often spoke lovingly of his wife and his two daughters, never missing a chance to mention them with pride.

Dr. Petri was one of the few educators I made sure to take a photo with at my graduation—he had made that much of an impact on me, as well as on my sister. When we heard the heartbreaking news, my sister and I spent nearly an hour reminiscing—sharing stories about Dr. Petri while crying, laughing, and sometimes crying from laughter. His presence in our lives left a lasting mark.

Dr. Petri, I will always remember your corny jokes, your deep belly laugh, your dream of one day owning a C8 Corvette, your long-hair phase, and most of all, the love you so clearly had for your family.

To Sheila, Mars, and Sam—please know how much he cherished you. His eyes lit up every time he spoke about you. My deepest condolences go out to you all. May his memory continue to inspire and uplift.

Scott was a bright shining light in our world. Those who knew him recognize the truth when I say without exaggeration that Scott was the epitome of goodness itself—always helpful, selfless, amicable, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, supportive, and generous.
I find it very hard to come to terms with the fact that Scott with his cheerful disposition is no longer with us. I was supposed to have dinner with him this past Sunday, when we received the sad news. Together, we had “weather’d” the pandemic, attended social studies conferences, eaten numerous lunches and dinners, and discussed literacy activities for primary sources via Zoom. I was always impressed by how Scott managed to keep up with his family's activities, maintain his “HistoryRewriter.com” website, teach a full schedule at a magnet high school, and also have  time to talk  to me! He was California’s high school social studies of the year, the co-author of a guide for using EduProtocols in social studies, and most recently, had successfully made the transition to a new career with the Bill of Rights Institute. I worked closely with Scott on a number of projects in a ten-year plus collaboration.  During the pandemic, Scott made videos for  our Texas and Florida books, showing educators how to adopt our books to  EducProtocol routines.  Scott also  helped design the literacy activities that accompany  the excerpts in our primary sources book.  We discussed Monroe, Polk and 100 other things. He had a first class mind as a historian as well as being a great teacher. We love you Scott and miss you!!!

One night, more than 20 years ago, my family was out to dinner with Scott and Sheila. It was an evening full of talking and laughter (which was almost every evening I ever spent with Scott). Scott made a clever, off-the-cuff joke that, from anyone else, I would have long forgotten. To this day my wife and I still say it to each other every so often not because it was funny, it was, but because the essence of Scott's humor and warmth was such a part of it. Each time my wife or I would say it to the other it would fill us with joy for a few seconds because of how strongly it reminded us of him. I'm quite sure that we'll never stop saying it and never stop smiling at the thought of Scott, who he was and how generous he was whenever we repeat that joke.

You were a man of intellect, humor, warmth and great generosity, Scott, and I will miss you terribly. My condolences to Scott's family, I'm so incredibly sorry for your loss.

Dr. Petri was my homeroom teacher for 4 years, but he was also the most supportive and sweetest person that campus had. We always looked forward to going to class because it felt like family and fun. We will miss him very much.

Professionally you were my teacher for four years of my life, personally, an older friend. Having you for homeroom majority of my highschool journey was a blessing. Even in the mornings when our self-focused adolescent selves wanted the day to pass by so quickly, you never failed to share a joke. Always full of energy and light emitting the room. I always found it funny how you and Mr. Scrymgeour had a satire friendly competition of how many school fights you have broken apart. Even in one of the lowest times of our education during Covid, you found a way to keep us interested, interactive, and educated. Til this day, I will always mention how much I admired you introducing us to non-cherry-picked history that many choose to forget. Such as the Mexican soldiers who helped/impacted during WWII or the history of the Panama Canal and the real heroes of that construction. Even when I switched homerooms, you always cared to share a conversation and ask about my future ahead.
After every year of college, I always told myself that I would come back to quickly visit the few teachers that impacted my education and future. You are one of Dr. Petri. I wanted to update on my nursing journey as well as just talk about life…you always mentioned your daughters and was never embarrassed to talk about them. Unfortunately, I stubbornly said, “I’ll go visit next year” and the year after that “I’ll just wait til I graduate.” You never know the value of something until it’s gone. I wish I kept that in mind. I am so sorry for your family’s  loss.  I enjoyed reconnecting  and talking with Scott at the CCSS conference in March.  He was an amazing man, leader, and teacher who will live on in the hearts and minds of students, colleagues and teachers he inspired to learn, engage and live a life of service to community, may the knowledge that the world is a better place because of him bring some solace to your sorrow.

Hey Scott,

You were one of the first faces I encountered at Kennedy. Not just seen, but felt. Brilliant, yes, unmistakably. But it was your kindness that landed first: a quiet, luminous warmth, an authentic generosity that didn't announce itself. 

For those who knew you deeply, I imagine your absence is a silence loud enough to break hearts. But in that silence, love remains, taking root in all the places you once stood, and slowly, gently, growing into something beautiful and enduring.

We need more educators like you. We need more people like you.

Today I was remembering my first day in my classroom at Kennedy, three years ago. You were the first to welcome me to the school.  You immediately offered your friendship and collegial support–asking me about myself, wanting to collaborate, inviting me  to your room to show me your resources and even lending or giving me teaching material.

You are what I’ve always hoped to be in this profession.  I so admired that you were a life-long learner who was excited about new strategies, wanting to learn from what others were doing in their classroom.

Most of all, you continued to  support  me after that first day.  As someone who tends to hide in their classroom and later regrets the time lost that could have been spent with colleagues, I so appreciated your constant visits, just to  talk and always inviting me to any lunches or other activities..

Yes, you were a character.  

Man, we need more characters to illuminate our classrooms.

You sure will be missed.

I was fortunate to have had the chance to work with Scott Petri for well over a decade. My son, Leo Kahlenberg, was one of the fortunate students who learned from Scott on a daily basis. As a long-time teacher on our campus, I was able to hand-pick Leo’s teachers when he enrolled as a freshman at Kennedy High School. I chose educators who I knew had a passion for the profession and Scott was at the top of the list.  I remember telling Leo, “You’re going to love this guy’s class.”  Not only did Leo love the class, Dr. Petri was his favorite teacher, by a country mile. 

They spoke often outside of class.  Scott always took the time to find a way to connect to people.  He didn’t mince words, but he certainly used a lot of them!  Our afternoon goodbyes lasted a solid 15-20 minutes, and each was more entertaining than the last.  There weren’t enough of them, and now there will be no more.  Currently a senior, Leo has suffered an insurmountable loss with Scott’s passing.  Their plans to play golf together and go for a ride in Scott’s dream car, an orange C8 Corvette, won’t happen.  Leo, however, will have incredible memories of a teacher who positively impacted his students.  They entered Scott's classroom trying to figure out the world and left with answers.  More importantly, Scott taught his students how to ask even more questions and find answers for themselves.  It was only possible because Scott had a sincere interest in helping people… the mark of a true educator.

I don't think those who knew and loved him will ever truly recover from this tragedy.  I take solace in the fact that my son was able to connect with a teacher who saw him, listened to him, helped him understand the world, and gave him tools to succeed.  As a friend and colleague... I'm numb.  I don't know how to feel.  

All I can think of saying is thank you.  In a life ended far too soon, Scott Petri left everyone he knew with a smile.  I will never forget the positive influence he had on my son.

I first met Scott in 1985, when he moved to California after graduating from high school. We were fast friends and made many great memories full of youthful indiscretions and questionable choices. When we both moved to LA and pursued a screenwriting career, Scott was generous with his time and creativity, helping to critique and workshop my scripts. Over the years since, our careers and lives took us in separate directions, but we occasionally caught up with each other, and ours was one of those lifelong friendships where you can go years without seeing each other and just pick back up where you left off when you get together. We spoke more frequently in recent years, and Scott was kind enough to write a letter of recommendation for my graduate school application. And I'm thankful that I was able to see him one last time here in Colorado just a couple of months before his passing. Scott, you'll be in my heart till the day I die, and I'll miss your laugh, your good humor, and your selfless spirit.

Seems like only yesterday we were dressing the kids at the Y.  Shelia were so sorry for yours and the girls loss.  Nothing but love and your in our thoughts and prayers.

What a heartbreaking loss. Scott was one of the kindest and most encouraging people I've ever met, and his dedication to his students and craft was unparalleled. May his memory be a blessing.

It was a great privilege to experience the love and kindness Petri had to offer. He was the teacher that made the difference. On the days all I wanted was silence, he left his classroom open for me to sit while he left to lunch. He offered great advice and terrible dad jokes to laugh at. I was so lucky to know him and hear the stories he had to tell. My deepest condolences to Sheila, Sarah, and Mars. He never missed an opportunity to tell the class about you.

I created a memorial in my classroom dedicated to Scott. May all my students recognize the reach of his impact. 

Our last in-person lunch together was in March when we went to the CCSS conference in SF. We were having New England Lobster and he always insisted on paying for lunch. This time, I begged him to let me pay and he responded “No, I know what the damn salary is like for a new teacher.” Luckily, I convinced him and he responded, “Alright, but I owe you one.” I replied, “Scott, friends don’t owe one to each other.” “Alright, but I’m still getting the next one.” You’ll forever be in my heart, thoughts, and prayers, my friend.

When I was first student teaching, I was in a situation where I lost my original mentor teacher. Scott swooped in to save the day and volunteered to mentor me at Kennedy. It was the best situation that has happened to me. I would not be where I am as a teacher without Scott. We went to conferences together, did trips together, and ultimately became pals. He would love to randomly call me to make sure I’m doing okay and we always had a hard time wrapping our conversations up. He was always one of the first people I told good news too. The last time we spoke over the phone, it was in April when I got engaged. On Monday, I wrote a Retell In Rhyme Poem, an activity he handed down to me, in honor of his impact on me.

To a beloved teacher…it’s been 5 years and I think of you til this day. Anytime life gets hard, you were always there to show me the brighter end of the tunnel and to keep moving and NEVER GIVE UP.

'Dr. Scott' as I liked to call him was a wonderful friend that I looked up to. He had an encouraging presence and new ideas that took teaching Social Studies outside of the traditional learn and recall. He was proactive in his teaching to support Language Arts strategies.  I will miss my friend and mentor.

Scott, I'm going to miss you. Your warm smile, your gentle presence, and the energy you brought to every call and meeting made a lasting impact. You had a way of lifting those around you. I will deeply cherish our conversations. They may have started with work but they always turned to what mattered most...our families. You always lit up when you spoke about Sheila and your two daughters. Those moments will stay with me. I will miss you deeply. Rest easy Scott.

This news hit me incredibly hard. Dr. Petri was one of the coolest, kindest teachers I’ve ever had — and I can only say that about very few. He was funny, warm, and caring — a man full of love, who in class often spoke about how much his family meant to him.

When I was applying to college, I had very little guidance but knew I needed a way to fund my education. I applied to a scholarship, unsure if I even had a chance, and I asked Dr. Petri to write my letter of recommendation. Without hesitation, he agreed — he wrote it, mailed it, and even paid for the postage stamp, which we joked about at the time. That letter changed my life. I received the scholarship, and it funded all of my undergraduate education.

Dr. Petri planted a seed that helped me grow into who I am today. At the time, I was just another student with hopes and dreams that didn’t seem reachable. But he believed in me. And that belief carried me further than he probably ever realized.

Dr. Petri — thank you, for everything. For your kindness, your support, and the way you made people feel safe and seen. You will be so, so missed.

I only met Scott once - when I was thinking of moving to LA in 2001 (and didn't) and went to look around and he graciously hosted and we went to a movie premiere together. It was incredibly memorable night, and Scott was so cool and interesting. Before that, my undergraduate film professor put me in touch with him for an independent study on screenwriting. Scott read my (terrible) script and offered me generous advice.  So I've never forgotten his name.

I only knew him after that on social media, where I would see his passion for educating. A former high school/now-college teacher, I looked forward to his posts because every one showed his energy for teaching.

I realize I knew him in person for barely an evening, but I have a feeling a lot of people knew him that way, and had similar experiences that I did. Just in my limited experiences, I could tell he had a bottomless generosity.

I remember you not wanting to teach AP Research and I convinced you to do it one more year. My son, George, was going to take it and I wanted the best. You were that.. You gave your heart and soul in the classroom and made your students, including George, want to be better students/better people because they saw that. You left a permanent mark in George’s and my heart. Thank you for all you did.

Scott, I am honored to have been a judge and judge captain at History Day with you. I wish I told you how much I loved being a super nerd with you. I’ll miss you at podcast check ins, civic engagement advocacy, and more. I wish I told you in person how important and practical your book is for classroom teachers and administrators.

Scott, I am going to miss you so much. You were my favorite person to work with and completely shaped my pedagogy. Teaching in the classroom next to you was a blessing. You kept me creative and optimistic. You guided me through my teaching journey and through my life. When I was pregnant, you taught me about family. When I was running professional development, you taught me about leadership. When I was daydreaming about the future of my career, you taught me about confidence. Thank you SO MUCH for everything you did for me, and for education as a whole. A day doesn't go by without the strategies you gave me. Thank you SO MUCH for treating me with kindness and respect. You saw my worth and made sure I saw it too. 

You once told me that you and your family would go for nightly walks, leaving your phones at home, and just enjoy being together. Since then, my family and I have been doing the same. Tonight, I will walk with you by my side. Thank you for being my friend, my neighbor, and my mentor. Thank you for shaping my life for the better.

I am devastated to learn of Scott's passing. While it's been many years since we've been in touch, Scott - and Sheila - will always hold a precious place in my heart. I moved to LA in 2000 and began working as a temp at Disney, with Scott as my trainer. He shared his kind and humorous guidance immediately, inviting me to a black and white double-feature with him and Sheila the very first Friday we worked together. I knew right then I had met wonderful man and a true friend. 

As luck would have it, Scott was ready to move in with Sheila. He needed someone to take over the lease in the Hollywood apartment he shared with "DubK", and I was the grateful recipient. He knew I was struggling living alone in such a huge city and was always looking for ways to help me. 

We saw each other regularly for the next few years, getting together for dinners - DubK, Shelia, Scott & me - always sharing laughs and talking about Scott & Sheila's future - and future children - together. When we'd part, our faces and sides would ache from the laughter. I had never met two people who loved and respected each other so deeply or with as much patience and grace. They each knew the other came from different worlds, yet theirs was incomplete without one another. Their laughter was magic. Their love was so true. 

My heart aches to know that someone so bright and kind and beautiful is gone. My heart aches for Sheila and their girls, their family, and their friends. We were so lucky to have Scott for the time we did; to hear his laughter and experience his kindness. Rest easy dear friend.

Scott was LOVED by all and was a mentor to many and will be missed by those who knew his chuckle and smile. He was like second son to me. safe now with kay and dick      Love chris

I was the lead admin of the Freshman Academy at Kennedy HS, which Dr. Petri was an integral part of. Scott loved teaching and being with the kids. He always had a way of engaging students and making their learning culturally relevant and had a knack for incorporating technology into the lesson. He was always the first to volunteer to share his esteemed expertise at school Professional Developments and even on the District, State, and even National stage. He was a published author on Social Studies EduProtocols. He was always quick witted, very effusive, and a joy to be around. His chuckle was contagious. He was an engaging conversationalist and always up-to-date on the latest school news, national politics, and world events. He was a great listener and an expert at debating what was the right thing to do. It was an honor to have been a part of his life. I was fortunate to call him my friend and colleague. What I wouldn’t give to have one last conversation with him.

I came into Scott's life around the time our kids were born, so that's about 20 years ago. Our kids are the same ages, 20 and 17. 

Scott and I had previous careers, then went into education. I liked the guy a lot and got along with him well! My heart goes out to all of those who were touched by him or were close to him. Words often fail in times like these.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Petri while working as a paraprofessional at JFK High School. My students in the Cougar Café program always looked forward to stopping by his classroom. Dr. Petri never missed a chance to step out, connect with the students, compliment their service skills, and generously offer to cover the cost of a treat so they could enjoy something sweet in the morning. He often shared how much their visits meant to him, but the real gift was the confidence and joy he sparked in the kids.

Dr. Petri’s warmth and genuine care made a lasting impression—not just on the students, but on me as well. He was incredibly kind and always encouraged me to pursue my education, checking in whenever we crossed paths in the hallway. His compassion and encouragement made him a truly exceptional educator. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Scott was the first educator that welcomed my daughter, Morgen, on campus  nine years ago. He immediately took her under his wing and always watched out for her.  We would become fast friends.  He became part of our village and welcomed my son Takoda  a couple of years later.  He helped raise my kids. I am forever grateful. I will miss our shared stories.  Chats in the halls.  His smile. His hugs. Scott you were one of the good ones.

Scot Petri loved history and loved teaching. He was that rare combination that made him a super teacher. He loved his family and never stopped talking about them. He was bursting with love and pride. Please take some solace from knowing how much he loved you Sarah, Sammy and Sheila. He passing leaves a huge void.
