Bernard Vianney Joseph Simoneau was born on January 15, 1942 in Low, Quebec and passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 in Courtenay, British Columbia at the age of 83 with family and his kind doctor, Sara Sandwith, by his side.
Bernard was predeceased by his parents, Laurette and Léo Simoneau, and by his older brother, Paul. He is survived by his sister, Hellen and his brothers, Maurice and Yvon.
Bernard shared a long and loving partnership with Shelley Goodz, together since 1978. He was a father to Annick and Mathieu, a grandfather to Jaëlle, Sabrina and Tristan, and a great-grandfather to Alexa.
Bernard loved nature. As a child, he spent his summers on his grandfather’s farm, an experience that stayed with him throughout his life and shaped his appreciation for the outdoors. In the 1970’s, while already working as an X-ray technologist, he also farmed in Clarence Creek, Ontario.
Bernard built a long and respected career as a Medical Radiation Technologist. He began his career in Ottawa, later moved to Calgary, and finished his professional life in the Comox Valley, where he served as Supervisor of CAT Scans before retiring. He was known for his gentle kindness to his patients.
Bernard was known for his humour and playful spirit. Bernard loved to joke, tease, and flirt, and he never lost his charm. A romantic at heart, he delighted in the company of women and enjoyed life fully.
Bernard loved fishing, hiking, and long walks, and he was happiest when puttering – whether in the garden, the wood shop, or around the house. He was an accomplished woodworker, an exceptionally skilled framer of artwork, and a passionate lover and collector of art.
A devoted pet person, Bernard shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Blizzard (2010 – 2024).
Bernard will be remembered for his humour, warmth, curiosity, and the pleasure he took in everyday life.
A celebration of Bernard’s life will be held at a later date.
