Our family was very fortunate to have spent time with Elaine when our children, Angus and Erin, were growing up.  She was a wonderful auntie and close sister-in-law.    We will always remember the sparkling light she brought to everyone around her, as well as her boundless love for Moise and Michael.  

I miss Elaine very much. We were duplex mates and she shared the exact birthdate as my partner.  I have lovely memories of fiestily discussing politics, laughing as we carpooled and especially her beautiful transformation of the garden she created from nothing.  The garden is still incredible as a living legacy to the gentle exquisite beauty that was Elaine.

Elaine’s remarkable, genuine smile spoke of her constantly positive view of life and of the people in her life.  
  
I last saw her on the Dec. 23/20 zoom call on my birthday, and my impression was “what a vital woman she is!”   So soon after she was gone. Elaine touched us all, and the bright memories she gave us endure. 

 Elaine's passing is such a tragic loss for all who knew and loved her.
She was one of my oldest friends and I have so many memories of her and the time we spent together. From school days in Summerland, sharing different homes while at UVic, spending holidays with her boys and our kids, through to special getaways and dinners when I came home to Canada, Elaine has long been part of my life story.
When I look at photos of Elaine, so many show how her eyes crinkled almost shut when she smiled. She smiled a lot. Her gentleness, empathy, loyalty and sense of fun made her an exceptional friend, her depth of love and devotion an amazing mother and sister. She was loving and so loved.
My heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved her, especially to Moise and Michael.

Elaine was a treasured friend for so many years, from our high school confidences, to our young adult adventures, family holidays with our kids and weekends with our old friends.  I loved her company.  She was wonderful to talk to about anything, full of funny observations, keen to explore the world and engaged in life.  
I will miss her so much.


I am so sorry and saddened to hear about the loss of Elaine. We became good friends in high school in Summerland and spent lots of time together in our university years both in Victoria and Vancouver.   Those years are filled with happy memories of dinners and going to movies and plays and going out dancing and long coffee talks and walks and riding on the back of her scooter in Victoria and Vancouver.   Elaine was funny, smart, kind and loyal.  But most importantly she was interested in the world and in whoever she was spending time with.  So my enduring memory of her is that no matter what we were doing Elaine always seemed interested and always made you feel that there was no where else she would rather be.   I am so thankful to have had her friendship in a part of my life.  
To all her family and friends my deepest condolences for the loss of such a beautiful soul.

Dear beloved family and community of Elaine's

On the first day of grade 7 at MacDonald Elementary School in Summerland a new person came into the classroom amidst all the strange and anxious and excited energies of the first day back after summer holidays.   I was sitting at a table in the back corner. She was directed to sit at my table and even as she walked closer I knew we would be friends.  That deep knowing that is beyond words.  And somehow, at 11 years old, I knew that I would be able to handle whatever the future held, because this light was in my life.  Elaine sat down and we said "Hi" and exchanged names and our bond was sealed.   

I give thanks for the beautiful, funny, earnest, honest, soul of Elaine, and I give thanks for all the ways her friendship gave shape to my own soul.  

I first met Elaine years ago when she was one of my son’s best loved teachers at EDM in CR.  We reconnected about 10 years ago in the valley and since then we have shared  many walks, bike rides, dinners out and endless cups of earl grey tea :)  

She was such an amazingly creative person and she had a fierce love for those she cared about.  She became one of my dearest friends and I am so very sad that she is gone.  I will miss her terribly. 

Elaine & i were friends for many years bonding over our children & love of gardening . 
We shared many cups of coffee, sips of wine, laughter & tears as our kids  grew up & our lives moved on. 
She will be missed. 

Dear Michael and Moïse
Your mom was one of my favourite colleagues at EDM, as she shared kindness, ideas and special moments while we taught and worked there together. Even in my recent last year as a Teacher on Call for her primary class, she beamed with enthusiasm, encouragement and inclusiveness for all her students. She always made a point of inviting me into her class so that they could greet me again and share some news of their latest achievement. She and I also shared a deep and personal connection, since we each had sons that we had "chosen" and who were treasures of our lives. I am hoping that your memories will help you cope with your tragic loss of such a special mother and person.  

I met Elaine while going to the University of Victoria way back in the 80's.   She was such a sweetheart, easy to talk to ,  and always cheerful.  She worked at the Italian Bakery back then  which was the best bakery in town at the time. 

  I remember going with her  to fundraising  dances organized by the peace walk committee. K D Lang, who was not nearly so famous yet,  performed  at one of these benefits.   Another time it was  the up and coming "Spirit of the West band'.   We danced and partied till wee hours of the night.

  Our trips to Black Creek and then later to Courtenay, were always the best.  Elaine accommodated us with grace and hospitality.   It was so great to get to know her sons Michael and Moise.  They were a delight!   We would often get together with Jean too, another old friend from those university days, and hang out, sip wine, and talk for hours.    The photo included is of the three of us.  We will miss Elaine tremendously.
