Marilyn Farrell (née Michell) passed away peacefully on March 23, 2026. She was born in Vancouver on May 15, 1944, to Tom and Lillian Michell. Marilyn was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother.
She spent most of her childhood in Victoria, where she created many treasured memories—especially caring for her horse, Lady, and sharing a close friendship with her dear friend Vicky. It was also in Victoria that she met her sailor, Lorne. The two were married on June 27, 1964, beginning a lifelong journey together. Her three children were born in Victoria but in 1978 they packed up everything and made the move to the Comox Valley to the current family farm where she remained until her passing.
In 2014, Marilyn was advised that without back surgery, she would eventually lose the ability to walk. Unfortunately, she was not informed about the possible severe side effects. Over the next 13 years, she endured intense nerve pain from neuropathy, along with ongoing infections in her legs. In the end, she not only lost her mobility but also her hearing as a result of the medications she was prescribed. Despite all of this, Marilyn remained incredibly strong, choosing not to dwell on her pain and instead continuing to move forward with determination until the very end.
Marilyn will be fondly remembered for her deep compassion for animals, particularly dogs and horses. She often cared for as many as five Scotch Collies at once, each receiving her unwavering attention and affection. She was a constant and dependable presence for her family—always there, always ready to help whenever needed.
She will be deeply missed by her husband of 62 years, Lorne; her sons Michael (Shannon) and David (Gina); her daughter Michelle (Dave); her beloved grandchildren Mariah, Victoria (Gustavo), Maddisen, Thomas, Virginia, Jeffery, Lauren, Jesse (Autumn), and Liam; and her sister Suzanne.
We would like to thank the numerous Home Care support workers and nurses for your support through the last few months while Marilyn was at home and the third-floor nurses who cared for her during her last days.
A private celebration of Marilyn’s life will be held at the family farm at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kitty Cat Pals, Elderdog Canada Comox Valley Pawd or a charity of your choice if desired.
