She was born Maureen Isabel Morrison to proud parents, Kathryn “Cassie” Day and Roy Morrison, right here in the Comox Valley at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
A storyteller and fourth-generation Courtenay resident, Maureen was delighted to be included in The Lake Trail Living History Project where she shared tales about the early way of life in this area, the determination and resourcefulness of the citizens, and how her family had helped forge the city of Courtenay. Maureen often reminisced about her first job as a teenager with tailor Dang Poon in the Island Rooms on 5th Street. She shared memories of the Lake Trail Shackey Acres, Bevan Camp Three during the Second World War, the earthquake of 1946, and how, at the age of 15, she met her future husband, Bill.
Predeceased by her husband of 59 years, William “Bill” Glowasky (2011), daughter Elaine (Vaughn) Michaud (2013), grandparents Jabez Day and Eva “Mom” Hardie, Hugh Morrison and Annie (McQuillan) Sugrue, she is survived, and lovingly remembered by companion Fred Blackburn, daughter Lynne (John) Allen, sisters Marguerite Morrison, MaryAnne Hayton and Molly White, grandchildren Michelle (Ian) Jensen, Justin (Joanne McKenzie) Makasoff, Christina Glowasky, Kelly (Teresa) Michaud, Christi Michaud, Thomas (Rachel) Allen and Nicholas (Nicole) Allen, great-grandchildren Zachary, Sabrina, Christopher, Brendan, Avery, Kelcey, Brynlee, Harper, Leena, numerous nieces and nephews and many, many good friends.
Maureen was a consummate entrepreneur. The Pennyrich Bra and Beeline Clothing companies fanned the flames of the home-based business entrepreneurial fire within her. Moe’s Cottage was established in the 1980s when she started hosting Rice Paper Lampshade workshops. On the weekend, Maureen accompanied and helped her husband Bill, a logger by day and a Disc Jockey by night.
In 1983, Maureen became The Comox Valley Queen of Aloe Vera. In her words, she had reached a low point in her life where she suffered several health issues that modern medicine could not solve. Her symptoms disappeared within three months of ingesting Pro-Ma Systems Organic Aloe Vera Juice. She knew she had to tell the world. She never looked back. After 40 years of working with this company, she remained honoured by the generosity and friendship bestowed on her by Don and Lucille Flint, Val and Sandra Fittler, and numerous others.
She is fondly remembered by many for her quick wit, kindness, and beauty, inside and out, through the many hours she participated and generously volunteered with community groups such as the Girl Guides, Sea Rangers, Canadian Daughters, Native Son’s Hall, Ukrainian Society, Comox Valley Women’s Business Network, Comox Valley Home Based Business Association, Comox Community Market, Habitat for Humanity, Morrison Creek Stream Keepers.
Her final days were spent surrounded by relatives and friends who kept her last days full of light and laughter.
Her parting words of advice were, “Enjoy life…you only have one!”
Maureen’s Celebration of Life Tea Party will be held on Saturday, May 27th, 2023, from 1-4 pm at Moe’s Cottage, 430 Arden Road (off 1st Street) Courtenay, BC.
